Going for my fourth round of MRI's this week. Sounds like I'll be hanging them up for good. It's not easy but dealing with the symptoms every day of my life isn't worth any game. Remember folks, it is only that, a game, and never worth sacrificing your long term well-being.

Sorry to hear that! There's always coaching!

there was an interesting story on NHL Network tonight that the sharks coach Todd Mclellen is having a lot of problems coming back from his. I'm hoping more info gets out on this as it should open up some eyes.

Took a slapshot to the head last night. Would have got me in the visor but I got my chin tucked in at the last second. Pushing and screening the goalie and all of a sudden it was like everyone moved out of the way and there was the puck. No time to move.

4500 helmet did a good job but started feeling out of sorts late this afternoon.

Not taking time off from skating but not boxing till I get cleared. I suspect my doc will use this as final straw to make me quit fighting.

Turn 50 in a couple days, I guess it's time.

it absolutely pains me to read this, and i always suggest it to everyone because it has helped me so much that i really got better after suffering so long.

go to a vitamin store, and buy Vitamin B-12 the liquid form, take one full dropper a day, right on your tongue, let it coat your tongue, and then swallow it, your tongue is more of a sponge with it so it helps.

Vitamin B-12 helps you gain the focus and livelyhood you have been missing thanks to the concussion and PCS, helps your brain heal faster and your memory come back.

I'm not a damn salesman but my neurologist put me on it as a last resort before scheduling a brain surgery and it really helped, NO surgery came of this thankfully.

GO DO IT!!!! i put it on my treasured habs gear that it will work after some time.

I had 1 or 2 concussions as a kid that I can guess. I most-likely had another last year (I was 24) as I took an open ice hit in beer league and the helmet smacked the ground pretty good according to the gf. Like an idiot, I took a shift off and went back in the game. 8 skaters for us and I was one of 3 D. I ended up hitting the guy back (both our hits were clean, but in no checking both got penalties) and I remembered the entire game and after. I had the headaches and light sensitvity for a couple days before feeling normal.

The brain is a funny thing and I wish a speedy and complete recovery to anyone with the syptoms as they are not fun.

I've had 8 -10 concussions, with the exception of a subdural hemotoma in '04 this one took me the longest to recover. The doc pulled my boxing certificate permenantly so that's out.

Hockey starts up again in 10 days and do I expect to play. Still getting headaches but no light sensitivity or dizzyness. I learned to deal with the short term memory issues after the subdural.

I should probably quit hockey but just can't do it.

Really sorry to hear about all the concussions going around, it's a tough break to take. Hoping for a speedy recovery for all of you and for those out of the game it's terrible to hear, my condolences. Lots of water and give the ol' noggin a rest for a while - sensory overload (TV/music) always drove me nuts when I was in that boat.

Pretty much the same here. I was in a snowboarding accident to get my subdural. Life threatening at the time for about 48 hrs. I really didn't understand the seriousness at the time and kept trying to get them to let me out of the ER so I could play hockey that night. I also had 2 compression fractured vertebrae. so yeah... playing hockey that night or that season was pretty much out the window or should have been.

Being stupid, I was out with the roller blades, stick, and ball about 2 months later. Dumbest thing I could have done and probably prolonged my recovery as well as possibly done some permanent damage both to the brain and my back.

The PCS symptoms were frustrating but looking back, I'm more frustrated that none of the doctors told me how serious I was hurt, what PCS symptoms to expect, and what proper and responsible recovery was. So of course I was going to try and get back to hockey asap which to me shouldn't have been longer than a couple of weeks max. The docs seemed more interested in just making sure I wasn't going to die and then cut me loose.

Anywho, I've probably 4 concussions since then. My short term memory is absolutely shit now. But I can't quit hockey.

Another sad story about the effects of concussions. This time, Bob Francis (former Hurricanes coach and son of Emile) is the subject.

http://www.usatoday....life/57851190/1

Very good story and there are so many around sports these days that we will never truly know the effects.

I wrote BU the other day after watching the priemere of "Head Games" and I have to tell thats a great movie. I got a e-mail back and hopefully will meet the whole team on another trip down there later in the season.

But here is another thought to ponder over. You have high school athletes that end up signing up for the milatary in active campaigns. Now some of them come back after say a couple tours they have had road bombs and such go off recieved concussions from that then come home and commit suicide. How many of these wonderful soildiers had to many concussions before they even signed up for active duty.

Asking the question only because I do not know the screening process. I am sure that 10 to 15 years ago (when my realtives went in to service) I am sure there was little known then. 2 of the 3 have had issues with depression they both played HS football on a very good team and one went on to College to play?

Looks like my season is done. I did my best Bobby Orr impression back in Oct and when I hit the ice my head snapped forward and the whiplash effect gave me some slight symptoms. I took almost 2 months off and went back. I played 3 games over 2 weeks and after the third game I was in lala land after I got off the ice. The next day I had blown symptoms, headaches, light and motion sensitivity, nausea.

although after a week off work and my symptoms going kinda away, I was told I should just hang them up for the season by my doctor today

at least there will be games on tv.

I also blame this concussion on me replacing some of my gear this year. Yes, I am that guy

Damn, I went through a lot of the same coming back from the concussion I got at work. Hopefully things get better for you soon. I have changed the way I play since my concussion. I tend to be much more passive and don't attack the net much anymore.

Thanks man. This week off has been good progression so far. My light sensitivity has almost gone away and the headaches have downgraded to a pressure type feeling in the head, which is more of an annoyance that anything.

What bothers me the most about this is it was in a invite game of shinny and this goalie didnt even try to make the save. He just laid down in front of me cause "thats what they taught him to do in goalie school" to stop beer leaguers from crashing the net. When I asked him if this was a fucking beer league game I just got a stupid look back. I know I should just drop it and move on but a large part of me wants to drill him in the head with a slapshot

That is a total dick move on his part. As a goalie, sliding into someone's feet has three purposes: deliberately mess them up, teach them a lesson, or, in professional circumstances ONLY, to avoid having to make a save. You'd be totally within your eye-for-an-eye rights to ring his bell, but having been through it yourself, I'm not sure you'd wish it on anyone deliberately. Maybe just fall on top of him while he's in the butterfly and blow his knees out...

Incidentally, two profs at York in Toronto are conducting an enormous concussion study as part of a larger Health Canada initiative. Alison MacPherson is an epidemiologist; Lauren Sergio's a kinesiologist. Lauren's website (here) also has some course materials that are definitely worth checking out. Two very, very bright ladies, both of whom have sons in hockey.

I saw one of Pronger's (there were also Justin Morneau, Brian Roberts, Sidney Crosby and numerous other athletes' jerseys on the walls) doctors for my latest. He has encouraged me to go into the bustling places that make me feel uncomfortable and to try to walk around as much as I can. This is in conjunction with a regular sleep schedule and resting. I have felt better every morning waking and begin vestibular therapy next week. I am excited to see what PT for a concussion is like.

I made huge improvements when I started doing vestibular therapy.

What is vestibular therapy? I'm still feeling like I have to deal with more "shit" mentally since my concussion two years ago.
