E600 versus E700 Helmet

Recommended Posts

I have had a re-akt cage on my e700 for the better part of a year now with zero issues. I have a medium helmet but bought a large cage and it fits my face perfectly. I throw it to people in the locker room and my helmet/cage combo usually weighs less than just the bucket of everyone else.

For the record though, I just leave the straps on the cage permanently attached and only undo the chin strap to slide my helmet on and off.

Since this thread has emerged I'll hop in here with a question. I've been hunting for an e700 and I was going to mount the react cage for maximum lightness.

Is this a bad idea and will it cause premature cracking of the shell if I'm using a cage? I've heard of other people using the combo but this is the first ice heard of the mounting to an e700 could be an issue.

My son has used the e700 M with a re-akt M cage for the past 2.5 yrs ; the only minor issue I had was the J clip. In order for the cage to close properly, in my case, the the screw had to be placed in the last hole of the J clip and the top screw hole of the helmet. I could not attach the J clip using both helmet screw slots. In other words the J clip is attached by a single screw and not by 2. I hope this makes sense.

I decided to switch the clips on the FM4500 cage, but the cage was pushing up against the shell, so I ended up getting a large E300 cage.

Even though the helmet is a medium, the large cage seems a little tight, but works just fine.

Does anyone know a place in Canada (Hamilton, GTA) that carries replacement padding for E700 helmets? I've asked at Pro Hockey Life, and they could not get it. There is a place in KW/Waterloo...but I can't find an option to order online. Might have to make a trip out that way.

Exactly what he said. My son has this combo in matte for his travel team, royal for his old travel team and now his high school team and a gloss black without a cage he wears for power skating. I mounted his J clips the same way, and a little gentle persuasion to open the cage up a bit and it works very well and is absolutely insanely light. The J clips that extend/arch forward tend to work better than the ones that go straight up. I keep an eye on the J clips as they can spin out of place or fall out occasionally. The only other thing I've noticed is the angle of the cage straps is slightly different how they come off the Bauer cage than what Easton must use. But he's never complained. He's been using the blue one for over three years and the matte black for one. He skates 5+/- days a week. For such an insanely light combination it has held up very well. Some very small flaking of plastic at the cage mounting point on the royal and some of the withe marks at impact points on the matte.

I put a little bit of anti-seize on the screws once or twice a year. The helmet construction doesn't allow access to the nuts and if one became seized it would require major modification to fix.

Of course they can, they just won't bother. I have not found any at the various LHS's I frequent and for the quantity of E700/600's they sell, it just isn't worth it for them. I purchased 3 packs from HM in Ma. when I was on vacation at the Cape 2 years ago for $9.99 each. For whatever reason they are now listed on various online stores for the insane price of $24.99.

I was looking for the replacement E700 pads for quite a while. Hockeymonky and Icewarehouse had them but the shipping to AK was ridiculous. My parents were coming for a visit, so I had them shipped to them and they hand carried them up from the L48. I bought 3 complete sets so I should be OK for a while :D

I couldnt believe that they were not available at any of the local hockey shops or ebay, amazon, etc...

For me the pads have been a major disappointment of my E600, which otherwise has been the most comfortable helmet I've owned, and still looks great almost two years later.

I too had to buy replacement pads because mine fell apart when trying to wash them. I washed them because they stunk in a way my old foam helmet never did. when washing, the backing which sticks to the velcro came right off the pads rendering them useless.

I'm in Ontario so I try to avoid the american retailers, and was able to order a pair online through a store in the KW area called Sportzone. I bought the last pair of medium pads they had. I would have bought two or three set if they had them. My new set are starting to really stink but I'm nervous about pealing them out to wash.

Too bad about this issue because it is otherwise an amazing product.

Wash them in a small laundry bag (Dollarama), cold water, gentle cycle so they won"t get mashed around in the drum. My problem has been that one pad fails about once every six months from the set.

I was hand washing them in the sink. Being very gentle. I reckon the gentle wash in my machine would be harsher then what I was doing...

When you say one pad fails, do you mean like what I experienced, with the materials just coming apart completely?

Yes, the material part peels off the pad exposing the foam core to which the velcro cannot adhere to. The helmet is aired out after each practice/game (3-4 times a week). I wash them approximately once a month, being careful when peeling them off the velcro. As I mentioned, one pad goes every 6 mths or so; the good thing is that it is a different pad each time and not the same one.

When the edges start to split, I just sew them back together and that fixes them rather permanently.

I super glued the edges together and that worked pretty good. The other problem I just had with my helmet is that I had a collision with a novice guy who fell into me and somehow when my helmet got pushed up, the pad came loose and the velcro pads inside the helmet scraped the heck out of my forehead. It now looks like I got tazed on the forehead.

Still like the helmet though. I did handle the new CCM helmet the other day and it seems like it would be really comfortable.
