Skate issues

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

I'm sure it's been posted here probably a million times, but will try anyway.

I know I am 8.5 EE, so length and width aren't the issues. I have a wide forefoot and narrower heels and a high arch. I think I have a slightly higher instep.

No matter what skate I wear (I can't fit into an 8) my heels won't lock into place, especially my right foot. I've tried so many skates, sizes, etc...

I do have an issue with my right foot I'm working on correcting with a high level hockey player here ,who is a sports podiatrist. Superfeet don't work for me.

My right foot doesn't sit flat in my skate, it's slightly twisted, which would be a major cause of my heel not locking down. It feels like I'm trying to driver a car that's out of alignment. Which you don't want while playing hockey!

I'm from the US, but living in Australia, and the selection over here is pretty slim... mainly Bauer, maybe the odd low-end CCM or Easton. I tried Graf G5035, but didn't help my situation. Even tried Reebok 30K Ribcor, but the pump did nothing to help...

Getting custom skates isn't an option for me over here, and I won't be back home in the US for a while. Just wanted to see what you guys might suggest?

Any help would be great!

What do you mean by twisted foot?

Stable 26 socks will definitely help fill in that negative space around your heel. Perhaps a D width boot, and punch out the sides will help get better heel lock; just throwing ideas out there

If I am understanding you correctly, you may need to move your holders slightly inwards or outwards, depending on your foot

You need to have the holder directly center under the spot where you put your weight, which is probably different for you from the standard position that the holders came

Hope this makes sense, harder to explain than I thought

I will be in Australia in July and can bring you a pair. Are you near any of the cities with the Stopconcussion tour? Perth Sydney Melbourne or Brisbane? We do not have any retailers there that have the updated version. I know Skaters Network in Sydney has some old stock.

Thats the Stable 26 socks I am referring to.

Hey guys!

My foot it self sits oddly and not "flat/straight" which is most likely due to skateboard injuries. I tried D width and still had heel slips...

I have a pair of Stable26 socks, but think they are the older style. They seemed to work on my left foot, but not on my right. I have the different sizing pack too. My left kept going numb due to the socks, and I tried the different combos they suggested.

I'm going to need corrective insoles for my right foot for sure as the stable26 won't correct my other issue....

Yep, I'm in Melbourne :)

I'd stick with Graf because it is easy to move the holder and this will help correct foot alignment issues, you can't really do this with any other skate. Try to get the narrowest heel and width you can find, I'd suggest G3 ultras but my heel would not lock in those and as it slipped up and down it banged into the heel curve causing great distress so I went to G5 ultras with the straighter heel pocket. Punch the forefoot out as needed, fix volume issues with gel pads or a new tongue.

When I can afford it I'm going to buy a newer Graf model but at this stage I have worked my current grafs over so much that they now fit like a slipper. Whilst I can skate in NXG's and apxr's I don't feel as comfortable in them so they have gone to another family member.

And your feet go numb when using ankle supports (such as Stable26 or I used to make my own donuts) because of the pressure on the nerves under the ankle bone, been there and done that. And here is the catch 22, your heel locks ok in place but the feet go numb, reduce the size of the support and your feet don't go numb but the heel no longer locks in place. I ended up making half donuts out of multi layered closed cell neoprene and I used to tape these under the ankle bone. When I changed to the G5's I stopped using them.

Definitely look into a narrower boot then, Graf offers some of the narrowest.

And they are easier to punch/stretch/work as needed. Plus, the holders are adjustable by simply loosening some screws.

This, with corrective insoles should pretty much take care of most of the issues.

May take a little time working the skates to be perfect, but it will be worth it in the end once they fit properly.

Very similar to me in foot shape.. Heel doesn't fit any retail skate with proper lock. But my high instep causes additional problems in that anything that accomodates my wider forefoot and high arch doesn't fit my heel - graf just causes me lace bite or not enough volume in the 703/G3 735/G35 models. Try contacting Scott at VH Footwear to see if he can get you into a custom pair or a stock pair.

Just message me before the game in Melbourne and we can meet at the rink and sort it out.

Everyone is suggesting stable 26 socks but what do you guys do if yous have games all week, continuously throw them in the wash over and over? I don't know if you guys drop 60 bucks on 2 pairs to rotate or...?

Air them out in-between uses. Wash them after each use if you must. Or get 2 pairs to rotate.

A pretty low price to pay to get the proper fit in your skates if they work :]

Sound advice. I'd also add having a second pair is good for your overall foot health.

I'm in skates every day, often morning. midday and evening sessions in either ice or inline. After struggling with 2 pair for a while I just bit the bullet and purchased enough socks to last me for 3 days. One of the best decisions I've made, I hate pulling on wet, cold socks.

Actually have lots of people that do it. Better fit. I had a guy last week need 12 mm on left foot and 10 mm on the right there are some messed up feet out there! Another guy had an ankle issue and had not been comfortable for 3 years in numerous skates. Superfeet (the correct size) and 10 mm in one skate with the issue and 6 in the other and was the happiest kid on the team! Its all about making sure the skate is the right one for the foot and his was a good one and customizing it with the socks to make it the best fit ever.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. You can check my messages where you might see how my feet looks like. Graf g75HIGH works for me (crazy heel lock)

Regarding the OP - I think my right foot does the same. My left foot points straight out, but my right heel wants to move inside to the left a little bit and this points my foot out to the right. As a result, it feels like my heel, and to a lesser extent the rest of the foot is sort of twisting in the skate. Enough so that it feels like my heel isnt as locked as I like it to be.

I've tried the stable 26 socks with 4mm on both sides of my right ankle, and it helped a smidge, but still felt like I had the issue. So, what I think I figured out is that I need to block my the inside of my right heel from wanting to twist. I did that yesterday with an Elite Achilles heel pad stiuck to my bare foot on the inside edge of my right foot right below the ankle where the bottom and side of the foot meet because I was infatuated for a week with skating barefoot, the feel for the ice was much better but I ended up ultimately not liking how sweaty my foot became and how it sort of slipped on the footbed).

So I guess I'm going to go back to wearing socks, the 26's, and put a 6 mm pad on the inside of right heel, because that seems to be the thickness of the elite Achilles heel pad.

OR, buy 28k's because they seem to lock my heel in good when I tried them on last week. But I fear having the same twisting issue with my right foot. And this makes it more difficult to use the outside edge of blade.
