Thinking its time to retire my skates

Recommended Posts

I've had my mission syndicate assassins for a long time. I recently started skating again. it has become very apparent to me that my feet have changed. A 10.5 D even after a re-bake is killing my feet. Its been more than 10 skate sessions of crippling pain to the point my wife makes fun of me hobbling around. From the lace-bite to the toe-box I think I'm done. I've been kinda limited to what I have access to try on. I've read that the new missions are sized different but I'm wondering about getting a e width. I'm also thinking of going Tour due to the width and I think I need a deeper boot.CCm rbz,s are supposed to be wide too though.

So here goes....Please,please share your opinions on whats out there. Im skating about 5-6 hrs a week right now. I need something that will last a while....married and baby #1 on the way. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dan!

I too have the (original) Mission Syndicate Assassins. I started playing hockey again after 4-5 years off. Like you my feet felt like they had changed. After 8-9 months..i feel like i have re-broken in my skates (my skates before i stopped playing were only 8 months old). I did however make one change to the skates.. superfeet insoles as i felt i could do with less volume. I had lace bite issues for a few weeks...but that seems to have disappeared too.

Best thing to do is try on some skates and find the best fit. You could probably get a good deal on the current Mission AC line (white skates) with the new DS line coming out in September. Be advised that mission has since changed compared tot he syndicate line. I think the missions are basically a bauer supreme fit and size...

Have to agree with sss1987. Get to a LHS and try on different brands/models, the staff should be able to help direct you to the right skates.

That being said, I currently use the Mission AC2s and absolutely love them. An excellent skate that has put up with some abuse.

sss1987 I'm glad I'm not the only person out there rocking old school status. I skate in a area that is predominantly quad skaters and not very economically advantaged. The few kids on inlines are either on rentals or target/walmart crap. I now have a following of kids following me around like baby ducks doing lil crossovers behind me at the rink. I'm there 1-2 times a week and its summer so they recognize me. I recently did something I've never done before . I walked in with my assassins and a old pair of Mission A50s I threw some wheels on and gave them to one of my 15 year old followers. I dont know who was more touched. He was so thankful it almost made this big guy jerk a tear. My wife thinks I'm nuts for not selling them to play it again sports or posting them on craigs list but I think I did something way better than get 15 bucks out of those old Missions.

Hopefully I sparked something there...who knows. Maybe I'll start some kind of skate/hockey equipment donation for the kids someday. Skating means a lot in my life and I want to see kids of all walks be able to fall in love with it too.

A EE in a Mission would definitely help. Tour / Rbk / CCM are the widest fitting boots around so going this route could also help, they are also deeper boots for volume. Bauer fit narrower than Mission these days. Your assassins will be a different length to todays models, Mission changed to Bauer sizing with the SE range so a 10.5 assassin would be equivalent to a 9.5 in todays range. However length is a personal preference and it all depends on how you like your skates to fit versus an optimal length (laces out, tongue pulled right out, foot in, toes brushing toe cap, about 1mm - 2mm gap max between the back of your ankle and the boot). Best chance to get a boot that fits is to get to a lhs but if you can't then make sure wherever you buy them from online allows you to return them for another size or boot. Hunt the clearances, although a 9.5 boot is a common size, last years top end models are on sale and even more sales coming up with the pending release of the new Mission and Alkali lines.

Dan, you did a really nice thing for that kid! At the end of the day, no one really wants old skates so you wouldn't have made much money. But, making someones day, like you did is pretty much priceless. I think everyone on here applauds you! That kid will have even more reason to love hockey now.

Back to your skates bud...you really need to try some on! If you want to stick with mission, the sizing has defo changed since being taken over by bauer (the mission range is the same as the bauer supreme ice skates in terms of fitment).

I'm looking to upgrade my skates in the next couple of month..im waiting to try on the new alkalis and missions when they get released here in the UK.

Just for reference... Alkalis are made by the old mission guys (the ones who made the syndicate line).
