Narrow skate with wide toe box?

Recommended Posts

If you remember my post a month or so back, I was having problems with my toes "cramping" and feeling sore during skating. Well, it became worse, and it turned into almost unbearable pain after reffing 2 or so periods. I went to the doctor this week, and it turns out I have a stress fracture in the bone of my big toe. Wonderful. The doctor recommended I look for a new skate (I am skating in APX2), so here I am. I like the fit of the Vapor quite a bit, but I need something with a wider toe box. I also wouldn't hate a bit more volume, as I very slightly fail the pencil test. I was thinking that a Bauer Supreme Skate in a "C" width could work. Would the toe box be as wide as a "D" width Supreme? I am reluctant to change to anything less stiff, as I loved the "skating on rails" feeling of the APX2

Just for clarification, it was completely the skate that caused this. I am on my skates 5x-6x a week as well.

I thought the Vapor was designed for you needs.

Easton make skates narrow in the heel but wide in the toe.

This is actually not true of the makos. They're actually regular to wide in the heel and fairly narrow in the forefoot.

I've always had the problem of my toes being squeezed on the sides by toe caps of any skate. I always had to have the toe cap widened but they could never be widened enough or in the right spot to accommodate my toes. There's a bump on the side of each of my big toes. When I ordered custom VH skates I mentioned this in my order and included pictures of this. Including this information in addition to the foot tracing which also showed the defect, Scott simply added this bump to the side of the carbon fibre toe cap. These are the first skates I've ever worn that don't squeeze my toes.

P.S. I had been diagnosed with Morton's Neuroma on one foot because of work boot steel toes that were too narrow. I had to wear over-sized boots to compensate since they can't widen those toe caps. I also had to get wider skates. I don't know if Morton's Neuroma can occur in a cramped skate like it can in regular footwear since the foot doesn't move around as much in a skate, but I don't want to find out.

The 7C NXGs have worked for me with regard to the toe box area but they don't have nearly enough volume. In your case it could be a good option as in my experience the toebox is the same as the 7D.

As an aside, anyone know of narrow heel/midfoot, high instep boots these days? I've heard the Ribcor is a possibility but living in NYC my options to try things on are limited.

Is your Vapor in a double E? That's what I wear, my supreme d width killed my big toe, but the vapors are perfect.

For me I always assumed that supreme would fit my wide feet the best, but I have found that the vapor was much better in the toe box, and a better fit all around.
