How important is depth in a skates fit?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm currently skating in Vapor X70's which fit pretty comfortably when I lace them right, and I was thinking of upgrading to the Apx2's when the new Vapor line comes out and they go on clearance, but I was at Dicks the other day and they had the 3052 Tacks so I thought I'd try them on and see how they fit (assuming that the fit is consistent along the Tacks line). I had to go down a full size from my Vapors but they fit great and felt really comfortable to the point that I'm reconsidering the Apx2's. The only possible problem I had was when I did the pencil test I found the top of my foot stuck out a little bit over the eyelets. Should I consider this to be a deal breaker? Because otherwise the Tacks felt awesome.

You may run into severe lace bite issues now or in the near future. Something to keep in mind. But, up to you if that's something you want to gamble on.

Which eyelets? My foot comes out of the top of my skates closer to the toe area and it's fine. However I've had skates where my foot comes out of the skate at the curved area (what most people consider the depth) and it was pretty bad. It affects the wrap around the foot as well. If you do end up with the skate, look at a higher end model as the tongue will be stiffer and prevent some lace bite.

I have depth problems in all skates. If the skate is a little too shallow then you might get away with it, but you might have to lace them up hard to keep your heel from slipping forward which may not be that comfortable and could make your feet numb and give you a bit of lace bite after skating for a while. If they are very shallow you are going to get bad lace bite.

I measured from the 4th eyelet from the top where the eyelet bar curves. The highest part of my foot only sticks out a little bit, and I laced them up and walked around a bit and they great. I even grabbed a pair of vapors and tried them on as a comparison and the Tacks felt much more comfortable, but I also know walking around for a few minutes isn't the same as skating 4-5 hours a week so I'm trying to not get too carried away. I also not sure what effect baking will have, positive or negative. If I were to get the Tacks I'd be looking at either the 6052 or the top end model, more likely than not the top end because of the 30 day warranty

If it's only a little bit, there probably won't be a problem. Lacing outside-in will help distribute the pressure across a larger surface area and will help avoid lace bite as well.

Too much depth isn't good if it prevents your foot from being locked in place. A thicker insole can help reduce the volume a bit, but if it is a significant amount, you risk having the insole slip or twist.
