When do you throw out equipment?

Recommended Posts

So I just recently received my 2 new pairs of X50 gloves from Eagle and it got me thinking, when should i throw out my old equipment? You always seem to have a need for them at some point. If i look at my current stash of gloves, i have the following:

CCM 4Rolls - destroyed palsm

Black/Yellow Eagle X50s - completed destroyed

All Black Eagle X50s - Brand new

Red/White/Black Eagle X50s - Brand new

Black Eagle X70s - Used/salvagable/not comfortable

So that means in my apartment, I currently have 5 pairs of gloves. Also add 10 sticks, a 2nd set of ice skates, a set of roller skates and countless jerseys.

At what point would you guys start chucking equipment? I'm tempted to throw out the CCMs and the Black/Yellow eagles but those i've owned for 15 years now.

Why not put it onto craigslist for a nominal sum.. I had a guy come to me to pick up some gloves (they were X6.0's that I don't use any more), he explained that he was trawling round for cheap gear for him and his son.. I ended up giving him the gloves for $30 along with shins and a stick. Made me feel good, and he got a great deal to.

Don't throw things away, people will always re-use them.

There might be a youth program near you that collects equipment for kids who want to get into hockey, but whose family can't afford it. I did that with a whole bag of stuff I didn't want. It felt good to know that it was going to someone who would use it, particularly someone who might not otherwise get the chance. It also felt good to get it out of my house after years of "I should try to sell this and this and this and see if I can get some money for it," but not wanting to spend the energy listing it online somewhere.

I throw my stuff out after I've had a replacement for a few months and I see my pile of things in the garage. Why do I have all this beat up garbage? Nobody is going to want my old stuff with tears and smells. If your stuff has holes and smells like you, nobody wants it.

That's only good for those who have purchased a subscription the Gear Exchange.. which the OP has not

Thanks, Joel, I didn't pay attention to that.

And there are some members here who never throw anything away, no matter how old and bad it is!

I don't have much old stuff, but it's antique, and has sentimental value.

please don't say that , we have to keep things balanced.

Don't worry, that was aimed directly at me.

I like to keep two pair of everything, just in case one thing breaks and I can't quickly get a replacement. So, my first set of gear is all about 1.5yrs old except my gloves which are about 1 month. My 2nd set is somewhere between 10-15yrs old. Skates I only have 1 pair of though, because I'm not made of money like some of you gear nuts here... ;-p

I got rid of my last pair of knee pads when all the plastic got dry rotted and cracked

My elbow pads I got rid of because the elastics were gone on them

I got rid of my helmet because it was really beat up (but wish I kept it now...)

I usually dump old stuff as soon as I'm comfortable with whatever is replacing it and sometimes earlier if I want to keep myself from crawling back to what is familiar instead of breaking in the new item.

If it is wore out, I trash it. If it isn't, I donate it to a local grow hockey organization or sell it, depending on what I think it is worth. (donating what isn't worth my effort to sell) Besides sticks, not one of the 3 skaters in my house have a back-up of anything, longer than the next gear swap.

Sticks just become outdoor/garage sticks or break, nothing else. Never sold or donated a usable stick.

EDIT :(I lied), my son has pants/helmet, that he wears for S&P/Drop In, that are not his team issued stuff.

I ended up with both my goalie sticks because someone trashed them... please feel free to curbside any unwanted gear at any time ...

I think if I had something that was worn out or damaged beyond repair I would throw it away. If I am ever able to replace my gloves I'll probably toss the old ones because they're just not worth repairing. I don't have the money to replace or repair things quickly so I try to make them last. ( I am in no danger of piling up old equipment, that's for sure... )
