Backhand Help?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Been playing hockey for about a year and a half now and still can't shoot a backhand, I can't get any lift nor power. And yet I see people do it effortlessly with very little movement, and have been told it's easier to get a puck up on the backhand than on the forehand.

Any tips and instructions?

If it helps any, I'm using a P92 curve.

I would recommend three things to start:

- have your bottom hand positioned lower down the shaft

- shoot the puck off the center of the blade

- follow through about waist high

In situations where I want to roof it when I'm tight to the net I will bring it on my forehand first (I shoot RH), shift my weight to my left leg and then as I'm following through I shift the weight back to my right leg. I find backhand shots are easier when you have one leg slightly in front of the other. Don't have them both directly below your body. Just imagine you are shoveling snow.

one important thing I taught my son was to drop his lower hand and shoulder. Same as above said it's like shoveling snow. He has a great backhand now

Yeah, I was taught to use your whole body when shooting on my backhand, do drop my shoulder and push with my legs while i shoot it. Its goes 10x harder when you use your whole body instead of standing straight up and using just your wrist.

The key thing to learning the backhand is what everyone above said but may not have focused on, lowering your bottom hand. Lower your bottom hand lower than you'd think you should, then go for the backhand in the usual point to where you want it to go. You need to get this into your muscle memory and lowering your bottom hand gives you more leverage and makes it easy. Once you get it down, start moving your hand up to a natural position. I promise you'll be roofing it in 10 minutes on the ice. After you get to that point, then you can start working on power...no point in working on power until you get the basic motion down. Also, make sure you get in the habit of keeping your follow through low, your follow through shouldn't get above the crossbar.
