Dropping an eyelet

Recommended Posts

I noticed on the recent SI cover that PK Subban skips the second to the top eyelet on his Reeboks. I'm assuming this is to simply improve forward flex? I was under the impression the highest end Reebok skates were relatively soft compared to the comparable CCM or Bauer skates- APX2, MX3 or Tacks. Do many people on here skate with this set up.

There are other guys in Reebok who do this as well.

Crosby; hard to see because his shins are a bit longer on him, but it's there:

Marleau; a bit different because his skates are a super old model (9K top of the line era?) and it looks like he either skips the 4th-eyelet from the top as well, or like there's no eyelet there, where the lace lock would be if he had it or used it:

I can't comment on it personally, because I skate in Graf. Anything higher cut than 703 just feels bad on me.

Edit: forgot/remembered Yandle:

In general, it's hard to say Reebok skates are softer for these guys right? They could have higher (or lower too?) stiffness than retail stock since they're in custom boots.

Some guys may do it because a lot of today's boots are higher cut than they were years back and that may make them feel like they need to do this to get the forward flex that they were used to.

Skipping the 2nd eyelet splits the difference between lacing all the way up and skipping the top eyelet. I used to do this with my older skates because they were softer (old supreme line; 3000, 5000, 7000, 8000, 8090). When the boots got stiffer with the CURVE material (One95, MX3), I switched to skipping the top eyelet.

Cool, thanks. I'll try it out. I've tried going no top eyelet but I feel like I have too much ankle movement and I'm losing power in my stride, although it is most likely just a preference thing.

I understand how skipping the top eyelet improves forward flex but I have no idea how skipping the second to top eyelet is suppossed to do this. Can someone explain the physics of this? I have tried both, skipping the top eyelet gave me much better forward flex but too much instability, skipping the second to top eyelet gave me zero increase in forward flex and a slight decrease in stability. I now use the '55 Flex' eyelet extensions, they have solved all of my forward flex vs stability issues.

I skip the 2nd top eyelet on my custom NXG's to prevent from lacebite. I had issues with the laces passing on the top of my ankle at that exact height. No more pain and I can still get my skates pretty tight.
