Shin guard recommendation

Recommended Posts

Same went for me kinda, as far as the impulse buy. I went into the store fully intending on buying the CCM CL after doing a ton of research online. Walked out with the Makos instead which weren't even on my list. The comfort was just that much better than everything else I tried on.

The RBZ elbows will likely be what I buy if I decide to not stick to the stockpile of white Projekt elbows I have saved up, they were pretty comfortable. I haven't tried on the RBZ shins but I'm in no hurry to replace what I have.

I know you got some shins already but I can vouch for the Mako's feeling great too.

I ended up selling mine for a single reason though and I'm curious if you noticed anything similar OptimusReim.. Right where the knee and shin liner/padding is stitched would apply odd pressure just below my knee when I put weight on it (ie getting up from a fall or leaning on benches).

If it wasn't for that and Id say "slightly less" protection than I'm used to playing in defense then I would have kept them, loved the tapered fit and ease of movement.

My Previous pads were 9K's, 8090's (still have them), Mako's and now 20K's. If I were to buy again I'd be hard pressed to decide between AX1, 20k or Nexus shins

for me, putting it on was one of the few times I made an impulse purchase on an item. It was just super comfy, light, everything I needed. I had purchased the CL before and hated them, sold them almost immediately. Apparently, for me, they made all the right changes.

+1.

After trying them on, my son ended up getting the RBZs as well. I was interested in him trying on the RBK 20's, but there was none in stock to compare, so that helped narrow down the choice. I also think since he is in RBZ shoulders and elbows, he figured he would complete the ensemble. : )

I've had the easton Makos, Reebok 20ks and the Bauer APX2s all in the past year as i have been searching for the best pad for me.

First off APX 2's are junk. Leave them alone.

Hmm.. What make you say that? Problems with them? Lacks protection?

I'm on the market for new shins and had my mind on the Vapor x100 shins

so you are very welcome to explain why the vapor's are so crappy..

Thanks for the response stick9.

Right now I'm trying to decide between the following shin guards: RBZ ($140), Easton Pro ($100), and AX1 ($80 on clearance).

I play defense so I get in front of a lot of pucks...looking for some good protection for shot blocking. Low weight is nice but that's more of a secondary concern of mine.

Has anyone ever had/used the East Pro Shins? They seem like a pretty good value at $100.00, but at the same time the AX1's for only $80 seems almost too good to pass up....any feedback would be much appreciated, thanks!

most of the higher priced shins are bulky. there's just more padding everywhere. the mako's are like down pillows wrapped in plastic,

i have the easton stealth 75s and they stay up and don;t move. went up to the 85s and while still being narrow like i like, they have more knee padding and more wrap around padding. + they don;t seem do stay in place like the 75;s do. i didn;t even bother to try on the rs II........maybe i juts need to break them in. if not i'm prolly going to be married to the 75's for a long time

That's why I have them. Crazy comfortable, really protective, and not at all bulky to play in.

I just got the Ccm Rbz 130s coming from Easton Synergy Eq pros because I thought those where like tanks, and way to bulky and heavy. But the 150s where on clearance for just $10 more than the 130s. Should I have gotten those? I could maybe take them back and exchange them. I was really looking for something lightweight that offered just enough protection. I play a forward in a beginner rec league. I tried them both on just the 130s seemed a little bit lighter and offered almost the same protection.

Edit: Basically I want to know if the CCM RBZ 150 shin guards offer a lot more protection than the 130s and how much heavier the 150s are than the 130s. I found online the 130s listed at 450 grams but didn't see a weight listed for the 150s. Thanks

Anybody have any insight to the CCM RBZ 130 shin guards vs. the CCM RBZ 150 shin guards? :)

I have the top of the line RBZ's so I can't say for sure but you tried them both on so you should be able to tell if there was a significant jump in weight/protection between the two. I would just stick with the 130's since you already bought them and the difference is negligible especially for beginner rec league. If down the road you find you need a beefier shin guard you can explore your options. The 130's are a perfect shin guard for beginner rec league in my opinion.

Could be a little hard on these but there are 3 things i use to judge a shin guard, comfort, protection, durability. I didn't feel they they possessed any of these qualities. I only used them for a week or two so jury is out on durability but the straps just seems weak like they would stretch out. Protection seemed average for a retail market pad. And the knee cap was awful if you go down it was difficult to get up quickly because of the design. I play A and B beer league so obviously some of these guys can crank a shot so which is why i like a little more protection. Probably fine for anything lower.

I think the pad that wraps around the calf was a little thicker on the 150s. I can't remember if the actual shin guard part if the plastic was thicker or if it had any extra padding behind the plastic. The main thing I was going for was weight though because my easton shin guards where around 750 grams a shin guard I think and these are about 450 grams a shin guard. I felt the Easton ones where hindering me and causing me to tire out earlier.

I use 130 for inline and the flagship RBZ for ice. The 130 are ok, love the way it locks onto my shins, but the durability could be a little better, then again online surface is rough on shins. The RBZ are a lot better overall, but the 130 will get you by with some decent protection at a decent cost. I wouldn't go any lower however.

If I'm having this much doubt maybe I should just go ahead and exchange them. I bet the 150s do offer enough protection to last me a lot longer if I move up in leagues. There wasn't that much difference in weight between the two either. Anything will make a difference from the tanks I had before. Lol I could spend the extra money on the top of the line also, just don't know if I want or need that.

Edit: I just found the weight of the RBZ 150s at 544 grams so I'm looking at about 100 grams difference. Oh well I got until Saturday until my game to figure out if I want to exchange them or not. Sry I'm going so back and forth on these. :) Anyway if I was going for shaving weight on them it looks like I made the right choice. Just the pad that wraps around your calf feels kinda flimsy, but I bet it's good enough.

Just for reference I have the 150s and love them. Some people claim the wrap system is weird/uncomfortable but what I do is put the single strap through the dual strap. Makes it a ton my comforatble for me.

Only time I ever had an issue with pain was when I pulled out the liners once and put them back in the wrong sides. Won't make that mistake again.

I went ahead and exchanged them for the 150s. They will still be lighter than my old ones. Can't wait to use them in my game tonight!

Edit:

Looks like I made the right choice! Got my first two goals ever playing ice hockey tonight! :)
