Maple Leafs 2014-15

Recommended Posts

I personally think the Leafs could of got a better return somewhere else. Currently, Nashville has the most points in the NHL so there is a good chance of being #28 in the draft.

From the reports on the prospect, he is a small forward and a couple years away from being able to play in the NHL.

I don't think Olli Jokinen will fetch much in a trade.

People can argue that Franson and Santorelli are just rental players, but they have been playing well all season and in their prime.

I am starting to like Jokinen. I love his answer at 3:55 when a reporter asked him if "he is happy to be here" ?

From his facial expression and answers he is candid and happy to be in Toronto.

There is something weird going on in the Leafs locker room in my opinion, the answers or lack of answers from current players

makes me suspicious. At first I thought they couldn't get along with Randy Caryle, but since he left the attitude is still the same.

With Jokinen, he came out and said he signed with Nashville on July 2 and shows up to training camp to find out he is playing right wing

which he says he has never played the position before. He says he was very uncomfortable and was not used properly.

Seems like a short and concise answer to his demise, I still don't know what the problem is with the Leafs team ?

Surely its not all Phaneuf and Kessel's fault ?

To me, the most surprising part of this trade was learning Olli Jokinen is still in the league.

Too true. I doubt he'll be on the team for long anyway.

Rumors right now are Kessel to the Panthers and Phaneuf to the Red Wings. Both are probably unrealistic. I expect Winnik to be gone pretty soon though.

Phaneuf would only make sense to the wings if the cost weren't high, Toronto kept a good amount of the salary, and if he would learn to shoot right handed as part of the deal. As much as I would like to have Phaneuf its mostly because his wife is hot.

Kessel to Florida doesn't sound all that far fetched to me. He obviously hates the spotlight and they have the cap space to take on his contract. The question is what would Florida be sending in return.

Phaneuf would never make sense on the Wings.

Phaneuf is honestly not a bad D-man as long as he's not expected to be a #1 (or a captain). He's overpaid, but I think most teams would be happy to have him... just not at his current salary. IMO the Kings make the most sense to me after losing Voynov... they just can't afford to pay him.

Agreed, somewhere he could go unnoticed would be good for him. Apparently Florida has inquired and are actually interested, the stipulation being that they won't give up "a young stud". I'm okay with draft picks, if TOR is going to be rebuilding properly.

There's a lot of talk by the media about Leaf fans not tolerating a rebuild. I think they're wrong - I think this is what Leaf fans have been hoping for for ages. Finally admit that "re-tooling" with a crap core doesn't work and start over. They've strung us along for long enough! The prospect of having management finally admit it needs to happen and seeing the draft picks coming in is exciting... for me personally, at least. I can accept 4-5 bad years knowing that they're doing it right, and it's certainly better than 4-5 bad years of never-ending mediocrity.

Some people in the Toronto media really don't want a rebuild. How can you criticize a team for being bad when that's exactly what the team is telling you to expect?

Too true. I've never seen such an anti-homer team of broadcasters before. Pretty sure Joe Bowen is the only commentator who actually likes the Leafs, which is probably why they took him off TV... Heh.

Glad to see Jokinen get one last shot. What coulda been for him if he joined the Kings today as a rookie...

Funny that the graphic refers to it as the Toronto Tear Down and yet they still have the likes of Kessel, Phaneuf, Lupul, and Bernier on the roster. They only tore down the garage but the house still needs a ton of work.

Those are tough to move at the trade deadline. I imagine at least two or three of those names won't be on opening night roster next season. The tear down has only just begun.

It was interesting hearing Kypreos and Johnson last night talking about how similar the Phaneuf situation was to the Larry Murphy situation in Toronto back when those two were teammates with Murphy. Thats... actually a fairly accurate comparison, really. Phaneuf is nowhere near Murphy in skill level, but the level of abuse they both got from media and fans is pretty similar.

That's why a lot of free agents want nothing to do with going to Montreal or Toronto.

Unless they're winning, but it's been over a decade since that was the case.

The media has gotten a lot worse in that time

Leafs recalled Colton Orr today. Apparently the plan is to play him Saturday in what will be his final game with the team and likely the final game of his career.

I think it's a fantastic gesture, as the team has never gotten anything but 100% effort from him. He may be a relic, but he's a damn hard working relic.
