Cutting stick

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I had a question about cutting sticks. Right now I'm using an intermediate stick (yes I've tried all flexes) but the problem is it's too short so I have to add an extension. Now the extension I'm using right now is around 5" (custom made) but all I need is about 2.5" extra. So I essentially cut the stick down 2.5" then put the extension in. I was told that if I cut the stick, it doesn't matter that I add the extension, it will mess up the stick and kick points. But I explained to the guy what's the difference?!? I'm still adding around 2.5". So my question is, will this affect my shot? Is it better not to cut the stick and just cut the extension?! Or it doesn't matter as long as the height doesn't change? Any ideas?

id always cut the extension over the stick. one costs 10$ to replace if you think its too short, the other over 100. not only that but if you decide to sell your stick when your done using it, cutting the stick will cut out some potential buyers

No, it will not significantly mess up the shot. That's balooooney. It may stiffen it up a little but it won't change the kickpoint. The kickpoint, even in "high-kick" sticks is going to be much further down the shaft than the top 3 inches. Most sticks are made to be cut down between 1-4 inches anyway.

What kind of stick do you have? If it's a low or mid-kick, you have nothing to worry about. If it's high, you have 99% nothing to worry about.

I would've cut the extension, too, but its more of a woops no big deal type of thing than anything to get anxious about.

As others said, always cut extension vs. cutting stick.. Not that it will make a huge difference, but obviously the longer the extension, the more chance there is of it breaking off at the top. Which isn't that big of deal since you can just replace the extension, but 5" shouldn't easily break off.

And no thats BS about cutting the stick and the flex point thing. In fact a lot of players including NHLers will actually cut the stick down about an inch or 2 and add a wood plug into the end to bring it back up to regular height. I personally don't like doing that but a lot of players say it dampens vibrations in the stick. The stick will however get stiffer the more you cut it, but once you put a plug in, that brings the flex number down a bit. So having the 5 inch plug in the end will probably make the flex number lower, but I don't think by too much.

Cools thanks for the replies. That's pretty much what I thought but the guy at the store said that I would be shooting a '2x4 club'. Haha. I'm using an apx2 which is absolutely amazing. The reason this came up is because warrior makes a tappered extension which is like my extension only problem is that it's like 8-9 inch long. I would have to cut my stick like 5-6 inch then put the plug in. Still be at like 2.5" longer than stock but I would less stick more extension

Intermediate sticks are whippy to begin with. You'd have to take of a LOT more than 2 inches to make it "2x4 club." Also APX2 is dual kick or whatever, but it's more a low-kick for wristers. Store employees are pretty funny sometimes, can only imagine how many smaller players are skating around with foot-too-tall sticks based on the same advice.

I have a couple custom extensions and have cut the stick in order to use them. If it was just a normal wood plug, I would cut the extension. However, in the case of a custom extension, like the ones Joe at Oggie made for me, it wouldn't make sense to cut the extension at all.
