Composite skates what to expect?

Recommended Posts

I am looking to up grade from my leather graf 609's and most likely going high end. Most high end skates. Is there any learning curve to composite skates. I saw a guy wearing tacks and they made a weird noise when he walked in them. What can I expect in differences in them? I am looking at the g9035 but will try what is best fit for me.

The 9035 will be less of a jump than most composite skates because it is quite a bit softer than most. I rotate between the 9035, nexus 8000, and supreme one.9.

Mostly what I'd think you'll have to adjust to is the complete lack of lateral flex. It'll lock your foot and ankle into a stride that may not be comfortable. Make sure you get a skate deep enough for your ankle and instep so forward flex is not compromised.

Thanks. Do they eventually break down like a stick that gets whipper ? I have also looked at the g75 is there much of a difference? Also is there any issues skating outdoors in the cold?

I went from 20 year old Bauer 4000s and Air 90s (wore both recently) to one.9s last september. Felt weird the first skate, slightly less weird the second skate, fairly normal the 3rd skate, by the 4th skate they were already my new normal. No big deal. Keep in mind i did my research and bought them because they were the most comfortable skate I put on out of probably 40 skates I tried, I didn't try to shoehorn my foot in to an ill-fitting glass slipper. I bought what felt best and am 100% happy with the result.

Great depth. The deeper inside edge really helped me a lot. It's a shock it took a skate manufacturer this long to do it!

I'm confused, where is the deeper inside edge on the 9035?

How do these compare to classic Grafs in foot wrap and stiffness? I love the feeling of the boot being almost vacuum sealed to the foot all around, while still allowing enough flex in the whole boot to move and flex the foot naturally.

The boot is asymmetric. The quarter and lacing on the inside of the foot is taller/deeper than on the outside for better wrap.

"The G9035 skate is also asymmetrical. You'll notice that Graf extended the eyelets on the inside of the boot. They did this because the ankle bone on the inside of your foot is higher and more forward than the bone on the outside of your foot. Sometimes, a player's inside ankle bone can rub against the eyelets. Graf tried to alleviate this problem."

Foot wrap is similar to non-composite Grafs but quite a bit stiffer. Less stiff than my 935s but so much more comfortable.

I will say that these boots could benefit from a CCM fit machine (or other compression method, like wrapping) as there is some negative space around my foot after baking. Nothing that causes rubbing or looseness, but it just doesn't feel as close as my VH or even my Supremes. I will be going to my LHS and having this done.

Thanks, that's brilliant. I couldn't find that info from reading Graf Canada's website, Hockey Monkey, etc. After reading your description, the slight mention on Graf-Switzerland's website,

"The asymetric upper construction and the 3D padding offer high comfort,"

makes more sense.
