I'd think how much a player sweats in his lid might have something to do with when it gets replaced. I try and wipe my S17 inside out but it is foam and I'm sure some sweat/oils/etc get absorbed. I don't think it makes it less protective as much as I wonder about getting an infection or at least some itchy skin.
