Flipping a Tapered Shaft to Fit a Standard Blade; Effects?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

My nephew has outgrown his junior sticks, but is still in love with the JUNIOR version of the heatley curve (Lie 4), and as this is a discontinued curve, we are only able to find standard Heatley blades. He's tried the intermediate versions but isn't fond of the different lie. As such, he has ordered a Junior Pro Shaft from BASE (70 flex), and the only catch is that it only comes tapered.

I've suggested that he could try to flip his tapered shaft and insert the heatley blade on the other end. I've looked it up, and have read about mixed results: some say the kickpoint is completely off and shooting mechanics is weird, and others have said they haven't noticed a difference. Have any of you personally experienced if there was a difference, and if there are any cons to this?

Thanks a ton!

Not only does it change the flex profile but flipping a tapered shaft makes holding the butt end weird unless you build it up (eg use tape) to the same outside wall measurements as a standard shaft.

I would ask a little more from him. What does he like or feel makes this curve the best?

My understanding is/was Eastons Iginla and Heatly where similar (curve wise) but the soles are different...Iginla is slight radius and Heatley is flatter. Slight lie difference. Maybe the toe shape is it? Iginla is round and the Heatley is more squared.

Why not look for a Jr standard shaft that would be on closeout? Also you could ad an extension to the butt end of a standard shaft. Warrior had an intermediate shaft that used a sr blade on the tapered end, but on the butt end took JR. extension plugs.

It's a discontinued curve, he's going to have to change at some point, why go through the hassle just to delay the change?

I am presently using a tapered blade on a traditional shaft (out of necessity, since I forgot my traditional blades on the other side of the planet). Only one game so far, but it is working out well enough. I just had to add some tape to the hosel, to make the hosel beefier to fit into the shaft entrance.
