I hit the ice tonight after a little over six weeks after a facial fracture. With getting surgery to put plates in to hold my fracture back together it seemed like it would take forever to get back. Very happy to get back tonight.

On March 20, 2004, we opened our doors to the public for the first time. It's absolutely crazy to think that we'd still be here 20 years later! Thank you for all who have contributed to MSH's success!

With protective especially, there is no “best.” At some point you are trading degrees of breathability and movement and weight for protection. So, you gotta figure out how to configure those different things that work for you. Think of it like creating a character in a video game. You have an allotted number of points, so you can’t just put every category at 100. If you want lighter, they’ll be slightly less protective, etc It’s been a while since I wore CLs, and everyone liked them, but it’s not like you’re gonna put them on and be like “oh, these are clearly noticeably better than everything else and it was worth paying $200 for a used pair of 10+ year old shoulder pads, plus all the time I spent looking for them.” Rather than thinking about “THE BEST,” the about “these are fine.” Get something that does its job and you don’t notice them much, and spend the money on sticks or drugs or something fun. Protective stuff generally won’t improve your game like sticks or skates might*. Just find something you can be content with and don’t overthink it. *these really don’t either, but let’s pretend.

Glad you're back out there, man! Please tell me you put a cage on? :)

Why do you need to change the steel? Is it broken, or you want to upgrade it? To put new holders and steel on, your cost would probably be around $100+ if you could find used stuff that works, much more for new. For those skates, you’re better off just putting that money towards new skates.

‘Best’ is all relative, right? Do you want protection, breathability, etc. I went through this journey years back. At the time I ended up with CCM QLT shoulders. I liked the breathability and profile. They had enough protection for beer league and wouldn’t have prevented the shoulder tear I got wearing them. I wore them for 4-5 years before moving into CLs. Preferred the CLs for moisture wicking and felt the breath ability was about the same, if not slightly better, than the QLT. When the FT4 line came out they were pitched as true replacements for the CL line. Unfortunately I tried the FT4 Pros and got rid of them almost immediately going back to CLs. For me, the FT4s simply did not breathe nearly as well as the other pads and that’s my primary concern. When the FT6 line launched and I found a pair of FT6 Pros for half price I figured why not. IMO CCM improved ventilation significantly compared to the FT4 line and that’s not accounting for the aer-tec part. I sold the CLs and these are now my primary shoulder pads. So for me and my ‘best’, the FT6 Pros and CLs fit the bill. I wouldn’t pay retail price for them, but if you can get them at a discount, they’re well worth it

Just an update with my experience with the ellipse 0. I'm sticking to it and like it much more than the quad 0. I've honestly never felt as comfortable in my skates as with this profile. I really liked the quad 0, but my experience with the ellipse has be awesome. I know it's not for everyone but it's definitely for me!

SVH was involved with KOR, so his hockey skate experience precedes DASC/VH/TRUE.

In my experience, TRUE sticks break about as often as CCM, Bauer, and Sherwood. There are a lot of variables that account for stick breakage. Its not just the level of play, but the position, size of the player, etc. For example, it is not uncommon for Centers in the NHL to use a beefier and heavier stick as compared to someone who plays Wing. As for the Catalyst skate issues, I think TRUE went too thin on the shell in an attempt to play the "weight savings game" and it blew up in their face. The 2024 Catalyst skates are very impressive, and I don't think you are going to see any of the same issues. I have been testing a pair for a while now, and the durability is very good.

I have the FT6 Pro shoulder pads, feels very mobile and light like ur not wearing anything.

First let me say this is a never ending journey. You'll think you found the perfect pair then a season later something will pique your interest and you'll try something different and be on the hunt all over again only to return to your previous "favorite" and find it's not as good as you remember lol it's an evil cycle. I've been through a bunch but tend to prefer the U+/CL/RBZ line, never tried Jetspeeds or QL's. I've had some Ultra Tacks and they were nice but didn't breathe as well and I didn't like how boxy the shoulder caps were, they had like a ledge to them. CL's were the best overall as far as lightness and comfort but their caps are just so big (which is why I never tried QL's or Jetspeeds since they have the same caps). I tried Vapor 2X Pro and 3X Pro, the 3X Pro was the better of the two and was super light and breathable but just felt awkward when I wore it, the caps or something kept feeling like they were hitting stuff when I moved (also the caps felt like they'd break in pieces if I touched them wrong which is just how Vapor caps are). I tried Stark at one point, wasn't a big fan. Tried STX, they didn't stay in place very well. U+ ones are awesome and havre the best cap/bicep combo but they don't breathe as well as the CL's. Right now I'm wearing CL's with U+ caps, best of both worlds, they're light, mobile, and breathe really well, ansds the caps are much more low profile (they're not the prettiest since I'm not the greatest with a sewing awl but they do the trick lol).

https://www.sourceforsports.ca/products/ccm-jetspeed-control-senior-hockey-shoulder-pads-2023-source-exclusive check the JetSpeed SMU series from CCM, particularly the Control. It had some similar features to the CL and are much easier to find.

Never seen those before! Cool recommendation.

Agreed, “best” is definitely relative. It seems the consensus everywhere I look is that CLs>everything else. Can’t find a damn pair anywhere though!

I see a lot of kids on the ice, 90% of them are in mid level skates. Some below. I have never seen a kid skate and attributed any shortcoming to their skates. i do see a lot of kids with no ability to get on their outside edges on get any kind of forward shin angle. They have their skates cranked and it’s like from the knee down they are an action figure, the ankle doesn’t move. my son is almost 13, a good skater, and is in the age where kids are enamored by high end sticks and skates. I could afford it but I won’t buy him top end skates.

Quad 1 would feel pitch even more pitched forward if profiled on a prosharp, with the same pivot point. Since the 1 is designed for a smaller blade the 6’ toe would extend over a greater length at the toe of the blade, removing more steel and feeling more pitched. If someone happens to have a set of OMNI quad profile bars for a Blackstone you can change that pitch on a Quad 2 without moving the pivot point, and changing the pitch by a certain amount of degree and making the difference steel height between the toe and the heal much less. I think this is what you are looking for. It’s pretty simple to do.
  21. 1 point
Quick clarification. In the chart, does -20mm mean the pivot point is moved back 20mm which would translate to forward pitch?
  22. 1 point
The brands don't care. They are trying to make two fit offerings that cover 90% of players, and anyone who needs something more narrow or wide can order custom. Basically, we are going back to the two standard retail fits like we used to have previously. lol
  23. 1 point
Removing pitch is easy. Any decent pro shop should know how to remove pitch from a template. I typically do not add ANY pitch unless a customer requests it. With a profile with an aggressive toe, the steel will already feel pitched since you will in fact be more on your toe as there is less material.
  24. 1 point
Ouch! That must have been a crazy amount of pitch, poor knees. I'm glad you were able to fix it. Sometimes we really create our own suffering. I remember playing in skates that had a lot of forward pitch and my lower back would be very tired after games. I thought it was normal until I changed skates and it went away, turns out it was the pitch of the boot causing it the whole time.

If they add volume to the those fits, doesn’t that mean that people who fit well into fit1/tapered will get pushed out the other way, and skates will have too much volume?

Except that custom doesn’t work for many people. Custom is essentially a pair of stock skates, individually sized to each foot in width and length. with a bit of pressure and heat applied. If your feet are far from Bauer shaped, the result will not be a good fit. If you have Bauer shaped feet, but there’s a bump or two that makes stock skates painful, or you are just a bit off Bauer shaped feet, then custom is ideal.

I can push the sides of the Matrix easier than the M4. Very soft boot at this price point.

CCM makes youth skates that are heat moldable, obv they have a variety of models but most of the higher level ones will be heat moldable. I picked up a pair of Tacks for my son a couple of years ago when he still played that they baked in the shop for him, they were closeout from the year before so they were on sale which made it even better (these were a size 12 from what I remember so still youth). A Leif mentioned they do make ankle sleeves which may take up some space, also maybe try some Superfeet insoles which raise the heel slightly which might help (stock insoles are always so thin and flat). Lastly, the old advice from Hans in the Mighty Ducks... wear thicker socks lol

Profiling can be a great tool to dial in your skating. But like others have said, you need to get used to the new skates first ( 8-10 times of skating at least in my opinion ) to see where you may or may not benefit from profiling.

Looks to be the same as what was posted 2 months ago just silver instead of black. Really hoping these come to market soon. Holding off on new skates and would love to mount these to whatever I pick up

Look what I spotted at State Wars (Winter Wars West) end of Feb, 2024. It appears that there is a new chassis in the works. As a long time Sprung user I am super excited! https://imgur.com/a/Ymndkaq

You definitely feel more blade on the ice so ya you do feel more stable but with that said I don't feel unstable with the ellipse. I feel more agile and feel like I can transition more smoothly which is exactly what it's advertised to be. With the quad I feel it kind of forces you to have longer strides where the ellipse with less blade contact my strides feel shorter. Def a benefit with "quick feet" for me on acceleration
  37. 1 point
Yep. Use an exacto knife and go slow making sure you’re only cutting through the excess fabric holding the shot blocker in place. If you want after the shot blocker itself is removed, you can use a seam ripper to get in the small space between the glove breaks to remove the fabric that was leftover from fabric that was cut off. Did that with a pair of Jetspeeds and you would never know there was a shot blocker on them

Then keep digging to see if there are shops that will do the ellipse with the prosharp templates then. It's not a skatescribe specific profile, it's a prosharp one. I find it hard to believe there are none in the US that will do it, but if you're not willing to ship within the states and you can't find any places locally then give up on it.

I know plenty of players that use their products and have had no issues, from recreational to professional levels. Historically, TRUE has had some bumps in the road, as all companies do when they are growing, and I understand that you and others have likely experienced some product defects. However, the vast majority of players have not had that same experience. I don't think its fair to use such a small sample size to determine if a product is or is not durable. An interesting story. I have some TRUE prototype sticks that have no logos on them. One person I skate with who played NCAA D1 dislikes TRUE as a company. There was no specific reason; he just said he had tried their sticks before and didn't care for them. In a recent game, he broke his primary and backup sticks and asked to use one of my extras. After the game was done, he told me that the stick was one of the best he had ever used and asked me if I could order him a few. You should have seen his face when I told him it was TRUE. It was TRUEly priceless 😜

Just tried the ellipse 0 coming off the quad 0 for the last 7 years. Prior to that I was on a standard 9'. I definitely felt the difference. I felt more agile during transitions and turns but also noticed a bit of sacrifice in stability. Overall I like it and am sticking with it for a few more skates. But my first impressions are good and after the first skate I didn't feel like I needed to or wanted to go back to the quad 0. After a few skates I'll swap back to the quad 0 for a final decision.

Did you bake the True skates before trying them on? I have to imagine there was some kind of error with the scan if you fit in an 8.5 in CCM and need to go UP 1.5 sizes from there. I wear the same size in both True and CCM
  44. 1 point
You'd have to ask true or the fitter should know whether true will predrill for you. I've heard over the years people say true won't predrill anymore but at the same time I've seen it done.. only way to find out is to ask them or your fitter. Even if the scan recommends 10w, svh skates aren't based on sizing. It's based on your scan and photos of you standing on a true brannock. The scan via the app you can get for your iOS is for sizing retail skates. That said. 8.5w in ccm and trues recommended 10w seems very off. Btw if the 9 and 9.5 hzrdus you tried on seemed a "bit" short then one of them would've likely worked as the foams in trues skates pack in quite a bit after a bake and even after breaking in. I haven't tried the ft6 pros so I dunno how true to size they are compared to Bauer and true retails these days. The ccm wide might be structured that they are also quite a bit longer than the tapered and regular fits. For example, the Bauer fit 3s are very similar in length to the next half size up in fit 1 and 2. They even use the same size holder as the next half size up Personally I wouldn't get them to predrill just in case. This way you can get your svh skates and see which holder is best suited for the size svh you end up getting. You're already shelling over a grand on skates, don't cheap out to try to fit a holder on them just for the sake of not getting new holders.

Not the skate as a whole, but some of its features. Ft690 was my first dip into newer tech skates, coming from Graf 707’s. The stiffness and responsiveness of the skate was very noticeable. More so on the ccms than the mach’s for me. Ccms felt stiffer and more responsive. Idk if that’s a one piece boot vs 2 piece or the fact that the Machs have much more forward flex, maybe it was the holder and steel, maybe the size 6.5(CCMs) were cut a tad higher than size 6 Mach’s?…..idk….but that’s how they felt for me. They felt stiffer. The tongue on the ccms was pretty cool. Very comfortable. The tendon guard has padding on it whereas the Mach’s is just hard plastic. I think the full interior wrap vs the comfort edge was an upgrade. Xs holder with step steel vs tuuk with pulse/fly steel. Ultimately, I like the Mach’s better. They fit me perfectly. But there were some really cool aspects to the CCMs imo.

Last 1,5 years I've been skating on Ellipse XS which was a great imrovement (even for an amateur player) over a single profile radius that I've been skating on my whole life. I could skate on it immediately with practially no time needed to adopt and it felt very natural. The most importantly, it immediately solved my ballance issues going from 263 mm to 246 mm blades. I was more than happy. However, recently I've tried Quad XS and must say I like ti very much for it's agility. Changing directions, quick turns, quick starts is much easirer than with the Ellipse. Maybe going straight line to reach and maintain top speed is better with the Ellipse but I think my favourite profile now is Quad XS on 246 steel. To balance out the top speed and gliding, I may consider dropping down ROH from 3/4" to 7/8". Let's see how it goes after couple more games.

So I was able to play in them earlier tonight. Very interesting experience. Good and bad. The good: more or less felt like how trues should feel. Foot felt hugged all around and comfortable around the forefoot heel and arch. There actually is noticeably more flexions when taking strides side to side but forward flexion seems similar to svh/tf line. Shift max holders seems very nice and the dlc steel is nice as well. What I found interesting was even after getting it re sharpened at 1/2" it felt more like 9/16. So something is either up with the steel not biting as much or the genetix insoles being pretty thick that it absorbs most of the "connected" to the ice feeling. Either way it's not a big deal but just interesting. The bad: even though I flared out the medial side of the cuff I'm still having rubbing on the inside of my shins just above the ankle. This is on both skates. I had this issue creep up on me in my old tf customs on the right foot and was able to fix it with spot heating and pushing it out but that area wasn't as near the eyelet but more the upper cuff. This concerns me as I might not be able to fix this issue without compromising the wrap if I flare the actual top two eyelets. I even notice my ankle bone rubbing on the top eyelets when I remove and put on the skates which I never ever did on my tf customs. This is probably due to the cat pros having less wrap and the eyelets are in a position where my ankle will graze everytime I put on or remove the skates. The neutral: the shift max holders are taller than ccm and Bauer and it made it feel like my stick was too short by about 1/4". Noticed this on some plays where I reached for the puck and missed. Overall if I can resolve this pesky ankle rubbing, the skates are very good. Even with the skates being more flexible I still felt most comfortable playing without the top eyelet done. I really hope either my ankles get used to the rubbing or am able to fix it bc it would suck. There's no visible mark on my ankles as it's not chaffing but more the hardness of the eyelet cuff. I will do a full rebake having the skates in the oven longer. I reached out to true and they said that their new recommendations are 6 mins Max but they can still be safely heated longer into they are pliable to my liking. Hopefully the reason for this is bc as I mentioned in my post above it never really got that soft after 6 mins Anyone else have this rubbing issue and was able to resolve it please let me know what worked. Stay tuned....

You're right, I should re-state that I'm speaking from experience solely in my area - MD/DC/NoVA. Also, I may not be privy to other mail in sharpeners that do FBV and with the rep of no-icing.
