Recording yourself (on the ice, that is ;)

Recommended Posts

I have been bringing my iPhone 7 on a small Manfrotto tripod onto the ice for the last 3 or so stick times.  I basically do it just to see how I look so I can improve things I don't think look right, like skating and shot mechanics.  I have been playing for 27 years and still take it seriously because I really care about improving and being the best I can possibly be, even at 41 years old.  Yesterday I had it down on the ice and a couple of guys (beginners, no less) gave me some good-natured chirping about it, but I didn't care.  If anything, I liken it to a golfer recording their swing (which is quite normal here in California).  If I am going to spend $1000 on skates and $300 on sticks, I want to make sure I am using them to the best of their and my abilities.

Anyway, just curious to see how many others on here do the same.

One of the best ways to improve is self analysis, I try to get players I coach to use this and I still use it for myself even though I have dropped out off competitive playing now. What the mind thinks and what actually happens are generally 2 very different things and seeing how you skate is often one of the best ways to get the point across. Good on you, keep it up and let those losers wallow away in their deluded self belief.

I’ve thought about doing it for improving my slap shots (they’re pretty bad currently), But I’d be kind of worried my phone would get hit.

Although for my skating I sometimes skate near the boards and look at my reflection to see how I’m skating but thats only so useful.

whenever we play in a tournament they tape the games.  It the single most horrific hockey experience I have ever had.  God, I suck something fierce....  and I really think they slow it down to like 1/2 speed!    I advise people to NEVER EVER watch themselves on tape.

Ha, to each their own.  I find it incredibly useful, I guess that's why NHL players spend so much time watching game tape.

It's a good idea.  My comment was intended to be a humorous one...

I do the same thing with my iphone too. I film at 240fps so i can analyse my shot mechanics and check how well I flex certain sticks. I even figured out how to use the footage to get an estimate of shot velocity.

I used to film myself playing tennis all the time - it was a very useful tool in order to self-study technique and shot mechanics.  For hockey, I haven't filmed myself too much (probably out of fear of looking way slower than I think I am...lol), but I have filmed myself taking shots using certain sticks with the slo-mo feature, to see how much flex I was actually getting out of them.

Has anyone tried using a GoPro Hero to film themselves at the rink?  I was thinking about getting one.

I think I may get one today - the iPhone draws too much attention and I am worried about someone accidentally hitting it.

Here's a few 240fps videos that I took with my iPhone 7 and uploaded to Streamable.  I had to crop a couple of them and Streamable compressed them, so the resolution isn't great but you can still see some nice flex in there.  I just ordered a GoPro, so hopefully I can set it up so I don't have to crop, at least.

Edit - The videos can take a few seconds to load... not sure what is up with their site today.

Every game. I use the suction mount to attach it to the glass behind the net (I'm a goalie). It's useless for footage from the helmet when skating out though.

I wish I knew how to take a slapshot...

You can... it's just weight transfer and form.  When I started playing, Brett Hull was scoring 70-80 goals per season and I would study his shot and shoot pucks in my driveway as much as I could.  It takes time but anyone can do it if they put the time in :)

I still have some quirks with my form that I don't like and I can get more on it if I fix those quirks.  It's a never ending process.
