Bauer Re-Akt 100 - head pain

Recommended Posts

Bought new helmet Size Adult M. Fits well.

After 20 minutes of wearing - feel annoying PAIN. LHS tells me - you cant return it. They tried to adjust - no changes. Same pain after 20 min.

Size L is too big even in smallest setting.

What should I do except of taking it to garbage?

They say helmets are not returnable at all by policy. Basically if you bought helmet and decided to return in 5 minutes - its not possible.

They said u can resell it - wow, I could be lucky if I can get half price for new helmet at max.

I bought it 2 weeks ago.

I think its padding, head fits fine when I put it on, pain starts after 20 minutes. I found same issue described at HM under reviews by 2 other people. Amazingly they both said - Great.

I have all kinds of other helmets - all Adult Medium, except Bauer 9900 which fits L size. Never had any issues with pain.

List includes: Warrior Crown, R11K, 7500, 9900, E700. (all different team colors - black, blue, white, red and finally yellow)

Howdy,

I have a medium re-akt 200 and have what sounds like a similar pain on the right side only.  Takes longer than you describe to start happening (more around the 30 to 40 minute mark) and seems likely to not be as severe (I can ignore it easily enough, though its annoying).

I've tried resizing a bit, but that hasn't really done much.  On my helmet, that area of the padding seems to be 'floating' a bit vs. being in direct contact with the shell.  I've not figured out any way to really address the issue, so so far I've just been concentrating my energy on pretending it doesn't exist.  :-)  If you come up with something, I'd love to hear about it!

Mark

It sounds like the helmet is too narrow for your head.  I would go back to the drawing board and try go find a slightly wider fit.

Of course the LHS won't take it back- what are they supposed to do with it?  Most retailers don't accept used gear back period. Not sure why you would expect an exception for a helmet.

FWIW, I have had 3 Re-Akt 100's and never experienced any pain like that (or at all) with any of them.  If I were you, I would try sanding some of the foam down where it is bugging you, or cutting some of the foam out.

I will come up with something. so far what Fletch said makes sense.

- I came to the store, did proper fitting with their specialist. I expected it to work without issues. There is an issue. So they can send it back to Bauer and offer me different helmet.

Same question - what I supposed to do with it? Other LHS takes for example skates back if they dont fit for 30 days or just if I dont like them. Same question - what they do with worn skates.

Yes this is only one visible option for now.

I have a wide head and I've found the Re-Akt to fit me the best. I've upgraded to this same helmet in the same size. I had the last generation also which had that yellow foam on the sides above the ears which helped a lot but this one doesn't seem to have it and seems to fit a bit narrower. What I've had to do is take off the clear plastic ear protection for it to be comfortable (and fit my cage). Not sure if you want to sacrifice the protection but it worked for me.

I'm not sure if you want to mess with removing foam. That seems more dangerous than removing the clear plastic. Also, I don't believe this helmet has the hard foam that you can actually shave. As to what to do with it...you could try selling it to a teammate or ebay. I've done both with used gear.

My LHS actually will take back used gear, including helmets. 100% satisfaction guarantee!

What LHS is this?  Most take returns of equipment up to 30 days with some exceptions (jocks for example)

I would not shop there regularly if their return policy is so draconian.

1-2 inches above ears

If you wear a cage with the helmet, check the width of the cage where it meets the helmet.  If it is narrow, it will pinch your helmet and make it feel narrower.  Try spreading the cage apart with your hands so that the width matches the helmet when the cage is closed on the helmet.

Another option is to use heat to mould the helmet more to your head, similar to what you would do with skates... I'd open it all the way up, and put it in a rocket dryer, or in an oven at 160F for 10-15 minutes until the plastic gets softer. Be VERY careful as there's the possibility of damaging the glue holding the pads to the shell.

When the helmet is softer, take it out and immediately put it on your head (being careful it's not too hot and you get burnt), then using the adjustments close it down, wait until it gets cool.

I did this with my CCM FitLite and it made a world of difference.. no pain at the top of my head.

I am in Canada, so as they said helmets are not returnable for health and safety. Not sure if any Canadian LHS would take helmet back.

LHS is great regarding everything else. So I dont think making their name is a good idea. I am happy with them regarding everything else.

Same pain without cage, we did a check of this in the store.

Sounds like an idea. But did u experience pain before heating with CCM?

I might remove cage doing this? Not to burn skin etc?

Yes, I had an annoying "bump" at the very top of my head - it went after going through the oven..

Definitely take off cage or visor, or go for an awesome checkerboard scar on your face!! ;-)

Another option is to wear a thin skull cap underneath your helmet..

The 2 helmets I've found had an awesome fit was the ReAkt 100/200 and the Fitlite - both of those are the only helmets that I found comfortable... but I've gone off Bauer stuff since they didn't respond to me from 2 emails concerning concussions and 2 emails concerning longevity of Vapor 1x gear I've bought (fell apart after 3-4 months of use).. I've gone with CCM and not had any issues at all with quality..
