I’m on the verge of ordering my second pair of Trues. I’m a referee and they’ve served me well over 3 years and who knows how many games. I have a couple of concerns that may have been addressed but this thread is massive:

To those of you who are return customers, has the process/quality changed from the past few years? I ordered in 2018.

When I ordered my current skates, I requested they do something about a problem I have with my medial malleolus. It is larger on my right and low and sits further forward. I suggested increasing the medial facing but left that determination up to them in the notes. This request was ignored while the others were taken care of. It causes significant pain after a couple of games and I haven’t found a solution. Would increasing the facing in that area help? Who can I contact when I reorder to ensure it’s addressed?

I am going to skip over the other pages and just ask you to DM about the fit issues.

Some massive "shims" on these Islanders players. @oldtrainerguy28 any idea about these? I thought you have been working with players with something like this.

    anthony-beauvillier-and-brock-nelson-of-

Well its not Red Dog Hockey boost from what I can tell. If it was it would probably not all be the same on both players on both skates. Looks to me like issue with hitting the boot so they raised the it by shims. No other real purpose if both players are exactly the same.

I'm fairly sure that the LS1 steel I have is stock 9' radius and I get 5/8" hollow.  I'm pretty comfortable on them but no matter how much I practice I haven't been able to improve the things I suck at.

Would a picture actually help?  What would you be looking for?  Just curious as I've seen a lot of talk that it's usually impossible to tell radius/profile just by looking?  I would agree that part of the problem is that I don't know precisely what I have (other than it's stock) and don't know exactly what profiling does.  Much ignorance on my part

I didn't think as much about a poor sharpening or uneven edges.  But, it's been an issue for a while now and I've had my blades sharpened a few times since I noticed exactly what the problem is.  So unless they are messing up the same way every time, then it's my own lack of function on what I have.

I need to see the toe and heel blend and I can see what kind of shape the blade is in roughly.

It's actually the opposite - I think it's pushing me too far forward on my toes and I have to really feel like I'm leaning back to be able to catch my outside edges properly.  Do you think that is possible to correct with Vapors, without profiling them?

Actually why don't you post a picture of the blade then we can see what we are working with instead of guessing you need this or that?

I am aware of the studies and have followed everything everyone here who has experience has posted.  I just don't think they are using data to develop the profiles otherwise they would be able to prescribe them better or present evidence as to why one was better period or in a certain context or for a particular skater.  I haven't found a cohesive explanation.  Think about mom and little Joey who buy new skates and get upsold a profile, they are going to go with whatever is suggested without a clue of what they are buying.

    I agree 100%

Did you see the same blade flex over time in LS2 holders with the lollipop?  If not, then it would seem the solution would have been to make the XS dial mechanism vertical with an integrated lolipop.

not a bad suggestion.  and next to no flex on the old ls2. good point

What’s the trade off or differences in a stiffer holder vs softer. I assume stiffer give you better power transfer, but do you lose something?

No trade off. That's why on edge holders the blade flexes after a few months. The XS will but usually takes longer. But from the start better energy transfer.

    What is skate profiling

Everything you need to know about skate profiling in the link above.

    My story.

I went from a single 11' profile sharpened at 5/8.  To something called a "Quad 0.5" which is a 8'-10'-12'-14' profile sharpened at 3/4.

It was the greatest thing I have ever done to my equipment.  I was faster, more agile and more stable on my skates with this one change.  The difference was night and day.  After all these years it felt like a miracle.  I became a better player over night just by changing profiles.  No joke.  I will never go back to single profile again.

I knew that would work out well.  Not a fan of any of the other Quads.

A profile will help you to get to where you want to be, but it's not magic. In general, it's not going to fix anything. It's just a tool to help you get better. It just makes it easier to do somethings while making it harder to do others. It all about give and take and finding the right give and take for you as an individual. One way to think about it is like car tires. Snow tires will help a person drive in the snow, but they won't save the person from a ditch if they're a reckless/terrible driver. BUT to get that grip in snow, you have to sacrifice durability and performance while driving on dry roads.

IMHO, if you're going to diagnose an issue, first you need to know what the proper technique for of doing something is. Youtube is a great resource. Second, take video of yourself skating and compare yourself in the video to what the proper technique is. Three, identify, the flaws in your technique and practice to correct those flaws. While practising take note of what things are giving you trouble. After a period of time, if you don't see any improvement, figure out an adjustment to your blades that you think will help nudge you in the right direction. Then rinse and repeat.

This is what I did. I experimented a lot. To get to the profile I'm using now, I practised to get better, and I made maybe a dozen incremental changes to my set up that got me closer and closer to what I needed. All the while, I was practising to address my flaws by improving myself. But always, it took time to evaluate and assess the profile and myself.

Here's a link about profiling that I found very useful. It goes over profiling, the various profiles available, and what they do.

    All excellent points.

Prior to delving into profiling and making adjustments skate fit is the number one thing that needs to be done.

2nd is blade alignment. You could tinker all day on profile with a good fitting boot but have a badly mounted holder that would ruin everything.

See it every day. From NHL guys and NCAA girls that I would work every summer.

Can anyone confirm this statement regarding the stiffness of holders?! I’m genuinely curious. Been thinking about trying XS on my True skates and if they are demonstrably stiffer I am even more interested.

I can. Tested it when it came out. Been swapping guys for the last 3 years.

Yeah definitely need to go back with my socks and try on a couple of sizes and fits.  My big toe is boney - almost a bunion forming, so the width the scan picked up is likely from that. My feet are more “duck” like with a narrower heal. I used to wear vapors in a D fit all the time until the x900s came out and the volume was decreased in the vapors.

ive also heard the scans can vary from shop to shop. So I’ll do another scan somewhere else as well.  What fits will fit, but not sure about how an intermediate sized skate will flex and feel.  I prefer a stiffer boot typically.

If your toe is touching in a 7 then you have mostly likely a width issue.

Pull the insoles and see how much room is in front of the marks from your toes. This pretty much all I do all day long.

I actually haven't seen many orginal fits work with the Bauer scanner when it first came out but definitely seeing much better fits as of late.

I recall seeing a release from Tydan back in 2019 that said he was using their Performance blade on a 10' radius. Lol, "using" could be a very subjective word in this release. McDavid is one of those outliers, one of the lucky 15% of the population that has neutral alignment. As Dr Lockwood said, his bio mechanics are so good he could skate just as fast in skates with no laces.

An aside question, are you traveling with the USA / Canada team later this year?

Well except for this past summer I have worked with him every summer since he made the show and I have never not seen him in Step steel and on a combo. So there is that and take it for what it is. As for the Tour i sure hope something happens but I do not see it being likely at this time. Maybe 2022?

As for the whole leave laces loose theory  I have done extensive treadmill work with high end clients and players as in the one study that were in True vs there old skates had much better forward flexion even doing them all the way up. As it said in the one study the Mako was the best fitting and performing skate even when done up. So seeing as that skate and True are based on the same idea that would ring true to the video I have shot with clients. And I know Dr Lockwood (former business partner) would agree that fit is paramount. Proper fit means laces can be done up snuggly and still have the correct amount of forward flexion for optimal performance.

I don't think profiles on their own are driving lateral crossovers, they are just one of the pieces of the puzzle that are driving advances in skating. By trying different profiles, hollows, steels, sharpenings, holders etc skaters are able to select the most beneficial combination to suit their style of skating. Think of it as incremental changes, 1% here, 1% somewhere else, add them all together and now you are talking significant change. fwiw the last I read was that McDavid uses a 10' radius and Barzal was on a triple when he won the fastest skater comp.

McDavid is on a combo.  Has been since Minor Midget.  Funny to is that he cranks his skates. Just doesn't use the top and is shin pad over.

The quad 0.5 was created for people skating on a single profile their whole lives.  (I think one of the posters here played a hand in suggesting it).  So it is a Quad but not as dramatic 8-10-12-14 vs 7-10-13-16, which is why a lot of people seem to like it.

Correct. it was designed for the North American player using single and doubles that wanted just a slight change.

There're not going to give you the blueprints so you can start making them yourself. You either have to skate with them, or fine someone else who can skate and give you feedback. That's what we do, we ask people to skate with profiles and give us honest feedback. I have all 3 on order, delievery should be first week of DEC.

Wow..... I'm with @BenBreeg show me how ita better. Don't tell me it is and that's all there is to it.
