Full protection wrist guards

Recommended Posts

Hey MSH,

So I've broken my wrist three times in the past year and have a plate in my right wrist. I've searched for hockey wrist guards but can only find slash guards. What I'm looking for is a guard that will protect my wrists from breaking when I fall, not just ones that protect me from slashes. Have any of you guys used guards like that? I understand they will be restrictive but I can deal with that if it means that I don't break the plate out of my wrist.

So what are the best full protection wrist guards to use?

Thanks!

Eagle makes Popsicle stick type wrist pads, where the protection wraps around the wrist.

Though I envision you're talking about roller blading type guards which would make it all but impossible to hold a stick.

Those are slash guards and wouldn't prevent me from breaking my wrist again, so those won't work unfortunately.

I broke mine in November , I wasn't wearing any pads at all and I fell on an outstretched arm broke right above the wrist , I was worried about it happening again but all I did was really strengthen the muscle in that area and I keep it taped when play, if you tape it right it wont flex back if you fall , I fell on mine less than two weeks after the cast was removed and it was ok , it hurt but no further damage .

Shattered my wrist about 10 years ago. Tried these but you really can't play with them. They are, however, the only thing I have ever seen that comes close.

Yea, i'd rather have a harder time playing than breaking my plate out. Thanks!

I just saw these- made to be elbow guards, but I wonder if they would work as wrist guards (carbon graphite ought to be ideal, if I can just get them to be comfy):

And these will be comfortable, but will they protect against hard slashes by idiots who think that we are in the NHL?:

what about something like this.http://www.icewarehouse.com/catpage.html?ccode=ACCMED

there are a few other options in the sports medicine section of ice warehouse you could check out.

EDIT: Fixed link for some reason the wrist guard I'm trying to show you won't show up so just scroll towards the bottom and you will see it. Its made by shock doctor.

what about doing the correct tape job and getting the bauer slash guards that's what I do and have had no problems yet , I broke mine last year still hurts from time to time but taping them has really helped me , there are a ton of videos on youtube that show how to tape the wrist for different styles of support that way you wont have to worry about a bulky brace

I've worn a Wrist Restorer for ages and it helps a lot (I broke my wrist when I was a teenager)...when playing contact, I'll put on the wrist restorer (it has a rubber bit that keeps the little moving bones in your hand/wrist from floating around) and tape it tightly and it's great.

I cannot really foresee anything that would completely prevent you from breaking your wrists being compatible with the movements necessary for playing hockey. It would involve immobilizing your wrists in a splint-like device/apparatus that would stop it from moving in a way that it should not. However, in doing so you are going to lock up your wrists and hands in such a way that you will not be able to stick handle or shoot. In my opinion, a good tape job/brace coupled with a slash guard is going to be the most reasonable protection for your wrist while still allowing you to make the movements necessary for hockey.

When I broke my wrist I tried leaving the splint on my wrist/hand to keep from doing it again. However, it made playing impossible and it had to go. Unfortunately, risk of injury is inherent in any sport.

Can you send me a link to that? My gf broke her wrist and this sounds like it'd be very helpful.

I broke both bones in my arm when I was 13. I had my arm set by 3 doctors at different times. The third time a specialist set it. So I kind of understand where you are coming from. When I healed up the specialist had me go to an occupational therapist. The occupational therapist molded me a small half cast type deal that wrapped the sides and bottom of my arm. It covered between my elbow pad and my wrist. It had 2 Velcro straps to hold it to my arm. My description really doesn't do it justice. It was not made from fiberglass or plaster.

I found a link for something similar. The green custom wrist support is similar to what I had but mine had nothing past the wrist.

I would recommend seeing an occupational therapist.

I have never broke my wrist but i have had alot of soreness issues. I've used this before from fall/slashes. Besides a little bit of compression and support it also keeps the joint very warm which is kind of a big deal when rehabbing IMO.

The 2 most important things i can recomend outside of protection/support are physical therapy and getting the joint properly warm before playing.

Building the muscles up again are crucial to using your wrist without pain. Probably obvious insights but i can tell you that they have worked for me.
