help needed to tune my skate profile

Recommended Posts

So here is my issue,

I switched from easton eq40 skates to bauer nexus 6000s. At first i chalked all inconsistencies to not playing much and getting used to a new skate. But a dozen skates in im still off kilter and am thinking about changing the skates profile to help. It seems that im slipping out a lot, that classic banana peel slip style where you lean back and your feet just go. I also feel slightly on my heels when standing still and working in front of the net.

Im thinking maybe a change to a bigger radius? Any thoughts on a pitch change? For this type of work will any sharpener do or do i need to go to a place that specialises in it

Slipping is not directly to profile, more of a sharpening issue. Sounds like they didn't get your hollow in the blade established or incorrectly. Can you go somewhere else and have them resharpened? That might fix it. Both Easton and bauer use around a 9' stock radius, so your change is minimal.

Depending on which Bauer steel he is now on, the problem could be that he was used to the more blocky style of the Elite steel which had a bit more steel at the heel and toe than some versions of Bauer steel.

I should clarify, its not slipping laterally and the edges are there. Imagine im standing skates straight, its when i put a little bit of lean backwards i feel myself falling back as if i leaned back too much, thus the cartoon banana peel slip reference. On my eastons I had both a 9' and then10' radius (the 10' was done by you on some nice stepsteel) and neither gave me this feeling.

The steel is their basic stainless steel which im hoping to replace once there is a better alternative. The profile should be stock at 9' and i had multiple sharpenings by many difference sources.

Try a LS3 runner, they have a flatter heel radius, kind of like the Easton you were use to.

Right now im waiting to see what ls4 steel is going to offer. With my current steel would going to a bigger radius give me the same effect as it will be flatter

I'd definitely also would wait to get the new LS4 steel. Regarding the graphic - it's about where to have your middle balance point (for example 30/60 or 35/60).
Thus you could adjust the level of forward pitch that suits your prefered style of skating. I'd recommend talking to the guys at Pro Skate Balance, they got a great know-how and experience of thousands of skates and many profiles.

Isn't ls4 just a polished version, a copy of what Step does? But yes a larger radius would feel flatter

No, the steel quality itself has been improved! Radius and steel height are the same as LS3.

Im not 100% sure, its said to be higher grade, harder steel with an emery finish but i can wait and see what it really is. Emery finish would be a bit rougher and the oposite of polished i think unless the message is getting lost somewhere. Taller steel is welcome as at times i bottom out on turns. I wish there was a way to have a legal step option but im not holding out. This stainless steel also doesnt hold an edge past 2 sessions.

Anyway, i went to a different shop today and he looked at my skates and asked where the last place i had them sharpened. He said the back of the skates were heavily grinded out, which must have been a real screw up bc they have only been sharpened 3 times including the initial sharpening. It also looks like the steel is already really short. Theyre at the shop now so well see this week

It is the bauer basic "stainless steel" it was very short to begin with but they looked like they melted like butter. New steel is definetely needed.

Got my skates back yesterday and skated today. Much, much better. I felt more balanced, didnt fall and didnt feel like I was slipping. The sharpener really wouldnt go into much detail which i didnt like but it worked. I also had my friend work with my on my skating and it was just a good day at the rink
