The 2015-16 Suspension Thread

Recommended Posts

No, I have no interest in either of these teams. But the video alone looks like nothing more than a 4 was warranted. I'm not sure the rest of the game should be taken into consideration for suspensions anyway.

Yeah, the video wouldn't load on my phone so I'm not sure what they show but there was a lot going on the whole game and immediately before the swinging the stick like a baseball bat. Haha.

Let's just say the behavior preceding the incident probably drew it more attention than it would have otherwise. Whether or not that's fair isn't up to me to decide.

As long as he doesn't give him the ol' Shawn Thornton then it should wind up fine so long as he challenges Simmonds right off the hop and Simmonds obliges.

Had the refs called the throwing the stick issues, and had the league not revoked the one game suspension, Glass probably wouldn't have had made quite the same comments. I'm all for dropping mitts when necessary, but only when both parties are willing. A punch in the face when the receiving party has their hands down and obviously isn't expecting it doesn't sit well with me, regardless the teams/players involved.

I agree completely. However, making threats (veiled or not) is just about the dumbest thing you can do. If things get out of hand, you are putting yourself in a really bad position.

Agreed on the stupidity of the threats through the media. Everyone knows what's coming, no need to broadcast it.

I'm really surprised to see Vandevelde get twp games for the hit on Toews. I think it was the right decision but I didn't think there was any chance it would get more than one game and even one game wasn't a given in my mind.

I have absolutely no problem with the hit itself. It was clean as far as the contact. The issue is how late it was.

The play itself definitely doesn't warrant 4 games by any means (honestly I think the 5 and game misconduct was sufficient), but he's a repeat offender so any suspension was going to be amplified. So 4 games in that case sounds about right.

This is an opportunity for the league to say, "I don't care who you are, you don't do things like this."  What is even more shocking is that as Keith was escorted off the ice he made a gesture that his stick came up as a result of the momentum from his fall.  He then imitated himself falling backward and his stick flying up in the air.......I wonder if he thought that was a good defense after he saw the video......Stupid.

His suspension needs to extend into the post season.  Anything less is not acceptable.  The penalty needs to hurt in order to make him realize he cannot do this crap anymore.  Carter might agree....

not the best link, but a little vacation for Keith? Or the match penalty sufficient?

5 games is my guess. It seems like an obvious retaliation to what he perceived to be a cheap shot. However, the one replay I saw made it appear that it was only one handed and it was as he was  rolling over. I believe that it was intentional, and unacceptable, but I believe that it could have been a lot worse. The league has a history of punishing the actual offense, and not the potential worst case. That's why I think it will be in the 5 game range.

I agree it will (should) be a minimum 5 game suspension. Definitely a case of accidently on purpose.  Keith has a history with the stick.  Jeff Carter in 2012; he received a one game suspension. He was apologetic to Carter.  2012, a vicious elbow to the head of Sedin, D for which he was suspended for 5 games.  He knows exactly what he is doing and his apologetic explanations, to anyone with any functioning  brain synapsis, after watching any of the videos, knows it is complete bs; even the NHL. Definitely needs some anger management courses. Just pay attention to the events that lead up to his retaliations.

Funny that you say that, I believe Coyle also deserved a suspension for his actions prior to Keith's stick swing. He jammed his stick between Keith's legs and then pushed him backwards over the stick, long after the puck was gone. It's exactly the kind of dirty play that can lead to serious injuries and concussions. That said, it does not remove any of Keith's liability for his own actions, I still believe Keith should be suspended.

I think he should be gone for the rest of the regular season at the very least. Second time you purposely swing a stick at someones face, inexcusable.

Keith gets 6, including 1 playoff game.

Sounds about right to me. The rest of the season was fine, but tacking on the playoff game shows the league means business. Depending on how you personally weigh playoff games vs regular season, this is basically a 8-10 game suspension in the regular season.

The "Burke formula" was 1 playoff game being equal to 2 regular season games and that has remained pretty consistent under Colin Campbell. I have never heard anyone in a position to levy a suspension claim that one playoff game is worth four or five regular season games.

As for the sixth game, I think the league wanted to avoid the criticism that would have come their way if he didn't miss any playoff games. Even the people, like me, that thought 5 was around the right number wouldn't argue the one additional game. Meanwhile, the people that wanted 10 or more accept (for the most part) that he will miss at least one playoff game. Those people would have been livid if he had been reinstated in time for the first playoff game.

Yup, at that point it would have been nothing more than an excuse to rest him for the playoffs.

I think the ones suggesting double digits are a bit nuts though.

Maybe double digits would be asking a bit much but this is the SECOND time that he has intentionally swung his stick at someone's face.   That has to carry weight.

Orpik was only given a 2 for a shot to the head almost 2 seconds after the puck was gone.  I wouldn't bet my daughter's college fund on any outcome. If there is any true randomness in the universe it is NHL discipline.
