Extreme Foot Pain on Outsides of Feet

Recommended Posts

Hi. I’ve been playing hockey for most of my life and have always struggled with foot pain. As a kid I never did have skates that didn’t hurt so as an adult I got fitted properly by a professional. I wear 7.5EE Nexus 1N skates. I had them baked and they were literally the only skate that went on my foot.

I got them last October. And still a year later I have immense outer footpain on both feet. I’ve done punches, stretches and re heatmolded them. Thick socks. Thin socks. Superfeet. Still. The pain along the outer bone persists. If I loosen the skate, my foot feels like it’s going to come out of the skate. If it’s tight I get the immense pain. I can barley skate st the level id like.

I cannot afford  to get yet another pair of skates or customs. I’ve had 3 in 2 years and it’s getting wasteful. They have been properly fitted for me. I got 3 opinions at 3 stores before I got them. I just want to play free of pain. My mom insists all skates hurt and aren’t comfortable. But I’m not buying it. No one else seems to struggle on my team.

Any ideas on what I can do? Thanks!

For once, your mom is not right. All skates do not hurt.

Hard to pinpoint because it isn't clear about the type of pain.  Is it a feeling of something rubbing/pressing against your foot, or a dull but intense radiating pain? If it is the second one, chances are it has something to do with the arch support.  Maybe focus in on the insoles.

As mentioned hard to diagnose. One of the things I do to help diagnose issues with my own skates is to remove the insole and see how my feet feel skating around like that. It'll feel plenty weird, but it will help figuring things out. Don't do this while playing a game. Do it during a public skate or stick and puck session.

If the pain goes away, then it points toward it being an issue with volume. If there's still pain, then it's probably something else like maybe arch support.

Propper fitted skates can still feel uncomfortable when they're new, but there shouldn't be pure pain that makes you want to rip off your skates.

Thank you for everyone’s responses. First off. The pain is like how do I describe it... like cramping so bad I want to take my skate off and have to on the bench sometimes. Right below the toes on the widest part. Immense pain. It improves a bit when skating but second I stand still it’s excruciating.

I have supwrfeet yellow. I have low arches. Without them and the stock beds the pain is even worse. I have tried using nothing and pain is on that spot but worse.

I have wax laces. The pain is managble if they are loose. But then I can’t turn right. And have no ankle support even feels that way when the bottoms loose. Too tight and you get last nights agony. Could barley play and it’s vwry upsetting.

Sad part is they arent new. Prob used 40+ times.

I had pain in the same place for a long time. Outside of the foot just below the pinkie toe. Felt like a cramp.

I found ditching waxed laces and not tying the first 2 to 3 eyelets very tight fixed it.

Okay I can prob find my old laces. I just found they came undone over the course of a period. I never used wax ones before last year and I think I still had pain. Will try tho.

My feet are borderline between regular and wide (depending on the model) and your description exactly describes the pain if the skates are slightly too narrow or tied too tight. Just one anecdotal data point.

But I might stick with the waxed laces and leave the first few eyelets loose. With waxed it should mostly stay like that, with regular laces I would think the "looseness" will just spread.

Have you ever been seen by a podiatrist or orthotist? You may perhaps have supination issues which may need to be corrected with orthotics.  I would get checked by a specialist to see if you have foot issues that only appear when wearing skates.  I supinate in shoes and pronate in skates due to jacked up ankles where I have pain on the insides of my feet.

One thing you can try is not using the bottom eyelet and start your lacing on the second eyelet. Releves the pressure but allows you to lace the rest of your skate as tight as you need.

If it doesn't work try not using the first two and see if that does anything.

Huh. Never thought of that. Will try it. The too loose at the bottom makes it feel like I don’t have good control though. But it could be me just not tightening at the top enough too. Weird thing is I never have foot pain unless it’s skating.

That narrows it down a bit. From what you're describing, it sounds like the arch support isn't right. Your foot isn't sitting naturally, causing the muscles to not work as they normally would in order to compensate. I would suggest getting a thin super moldable insole ( I like Bauer Speed Plates) and re-baking your skates at least 2 times in your home oven ( it's easy, just follow instructions on youtube).
