  1. My skates finally, after some fiasco with the holders and steel. It's finally done, had a game last night and it felt incredible. Halfway through the game I felt confident enough to loosen the laces even more. Credit where credit is due. The guys that I originally sent these skates to have the holders switched, mangled the job (bent the steel as well as a result). But Joe from B-Sharp in Ottawa was able to fix these up better than before, he actually called TRUE to get my scan and their build papers, and consulted with them on how and where to mount these properly, got me back on the ice the next day. Above and beyond work.
  2. Also neat to see how Rask wants his stored open, and Halak stores his closed. He could be breaking them in too, break in a few and feel how the are during the warmups.
  3. Looks nice and clean. I'm about to drop off my skates for the holder switch to SB4.0 as well this afternoon.
  4. Long shot, but what size are you? You're in an extremely similar situation as I am/was. I would go SB4.0 (which is what I will end up doing because I have Blacksteel for it already), because I realized that in all my years of playing, the quick change ability would have only saved me a handful of times, if that.
  5. I hate this thread, and I hate that I have something relevant to post. Here's a vid of the tests at Virginia Tech.
  6. He says a few of the holes are slightly off-center from one holder to another, I dunno what to say to that.
  7. My skate guy wants to first epoxy the holes and fill them anyway before re-drilling them, is that a good idea?
  8. I was told to tie them with only like 75% tightness, if you crank on them you will pull the eyelets out. I was warned like three times by two LHS employees to make sure, because apparently it has happened before. I have a clicking noise coming from the holder too and it drives me nuts, I hear some folks have the same issue with the TUUKs that they've swapped out too. I am going to be swapping them out as soon as I can get my hands on the XS holders (can someone confirm that the holes line up? Or if there are any caveats to look out for?). I've been able to reduce them by placing a bit of hard plastic tape on top of where the blade hooks onto the holder. But that's not a permanent solution it seems.
  9. That's funny, I think I have the exact Warrior bag, and it's falling apart after two years (4 seasons). The piping ripped after one, and the inner pockets ripped after two. Before that, my old Cooper bag lasted me 15 years, and my Easton bag lasted me 10 as well.
  10. Getting a bit off topic, but yeah a quick google search shows. https://imgur.com/a/VeyxQsV
  11. I think Michael Grabner and Trocheck are using it, among others.
  12. That's a really generous offer, thank you. I will ask the pick up guys that I skate with.
  13. This seems like a great tool I'll probably pick one up at least as a "Just in Case" device once the 11/16" becomes available (and probably a 1/2" at the same time for my kids' skates). You mentioned Carleton Ravens University, are you in Ottawa as well?
  14. The guy that I get my skates sharpened at is amazing, he's like a skate whisperer. He's the one of three guys in my town that will actively work with people to get the perfect profile/hollow, and unfortunately/fortunately word spread and he's gotten super popular with teams (2nd one is extremely popular with figure skaters and on the other side of town, the other is not well known yet but have really limited hours). During tourney week, it can get to a 3 hour wait, this is making me consider Sparx or other automatic home sharpener option. There'll be three of us skating in the winter, I usually play twice a week all year long, so savings might be there too.
  15. Are you able to send the used Blade Barbers back for recycling? Seems like a good "just in case" tool for the times where you can't find the time to get a sharpen, or if you like doing one pass before every game to lengthen the time between sharpens. Are there any downsides to using this? Like what happens if you put too much pressure? Does it take off more metal than a usual sharpen?
  16. I have to get mine on by putting in my foot sideways and then twisting it into position. I also use a shoe horn sometimes to help it along.
  17. I've never thought of the gear weight affecting the hollow, but usually I go sharper for colder like ODRs (11/16" to 5/8"). But it makes sense, I once carried my son (35~40 lbs) around during free skate, and I could def feel slip around the corners.
  18. True skates are the most comfortable skates I've been on, but that said, if I can find something like the old Makos or Graf that fits 80% as good, I could see myself going that route as well.
  19. I'd rather not pay extra for QC on appearance that I'm going to scuff up while playing. I'm not trying to disparage your desire for proper finish and looks though, I understand what you mean, but it's not just me.
  20. Funny analogy, I've always had two types of customers when I worked on making cars go fast. Some guys who were serious about speed didn't care much about the paint job (or even rust!), others had money to burn on layers and layers of paint. It's ok to be both, but both exist.
  21. Also known as Choice Paralysis or Analysis Paralysis. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analysis_paralysis In the end, I think if you voice your concern, a good LHS will be able to convey/translate the message as well as they possibly can.
  22. On the Outside? I don't see how it could be more beneficial for protection to be flexible in this area. On the Inside? It might be interesting to have the skate feel differently in response to how hard you push on the skate. But I imagine more would opt for predictable response. But it could be quite cool to have your skate moulded to your feet every time you skate somehow. D3O is quite a wonderful product, I hope to see it used more even outside the world of Hockey and Motorbikes.
  23. lol, I've asked for the new holders, as my fix is only temporary. I've actually been looking at the Bladetech, it seems pretty popular here.
  24. I tried reseating the blade, but the noise was still there. I added a small piece of resilient plastic tape at the top of the blade, and all of the creaking is gone (after lacing it up on dry land). I'll actually skate on it tonight and see how it goes, but it's good to know that the sound and the feeling was coming from the holder and the blade, and not from the rivets or the skate itself. Crazy how that tiny little bit of space can make the whole boot feel off. https://imgur.com/a/NPNZVwr That black line mark shows much it moved in and out.
  25. Left more than the right. The left one I can make the noise happen with my hand, the right one is very slight and I have to stand on it. I will try reseating the blade, and if that doesn't work, I'll add some material and see . It's so slight and doesn't affect my skating at all, but boy is it ever annoying. It makes me "aware" about my skating, like suddenly being aware of your breathing, your saliva, and blinking. Thanks for the vid! I'll def try this. I emailed True just so the issue is recorded and timestamped, they wanted to send me a new holder anyway, but I told them I'd try to fix it first.
