  1. Give me a call tomorrow so that we can knock out your custom spec.

    OOOOH OOOOH !

    Me too! :P

Post pics of those bad boys johnpace2....and thanks for the hookup on the ride to the airport. It was COLD on Sunday, even at 7:30. We need to plan some open hockey at Kettler when I am in the DC area...and spend just as much time at RFD as the Verizon Center for some Caps games! B)

  2. Nike/Bauer Vapor XXXX custom 9D

    Time - 3 months 2-3 times a week

    Height - 6' 2"

    Weight 160 lbs

Previous skate - Vapor XXXX retail

Fit: Custom skate...enough said. I used the regular last, because it fit the shape of my foot. I just wanted some extras: +1 stiffness, grip liner, reinforced eyelets, One90 tongue with thicker black felt. The retail boot was a little roomier in the midfoot, due to my narrow appendage, but the One90 black felt tongue solved that issue. Needless to say the fit is perfect. Won't score here, because any boot that is custom fit will feel perfect.

Blade/holder: Is it me, or do they use better steel on a custom boot than the retail boot? The LS2 steel on my custom boots hold an edge better, and are a lot less prone to nics. I find that I have to sharpen them once every 4-5 skates, whereas the retail LS2 steel required a sharpening once every other skate. The LS2 holder is still my favorite holder. It holds up extremely well, especially with my propensity to get in front of shots as a defenseman. 10/10

Weight/protection: This is not the lightest boot, but is not a brick. The +1 in stiffness doesn't seem to matter...we're probably looking at a difference of a few grams. Protection is top notch. I have blocked a few right off the toe and the anterior ankle with little to no pain. I would say that there is a balance between weight and protection, and this skate is the perfect balance of the two. 9.5/10

Durability: My two pair of retails began to break down after a year at the ankle. I attribute that to the fact that I had to crank down on the laces and wrap the ankle to get the fit I like. With the custom boots, this is no longer an issue, as the tongue and fit have eliminated the negative space. After 3 months, they look brand new. With the reinforced eyelets, double stitching, and fit... these will last a few years. 10/10

Intangibles: A custom skate....nothing compares to it. 10/10

Conclusion: If you think the retail boot is a great boot, a custom is like no other. Made in Canada, top quality craftsmanship, and attention to detail. This will be a fun season wearing a boot that responds to every command my foot provides.

I would give this boot a 10, but some may complain about the weight. I will give it a 9.8/10 to be fair.

  3. ...warn out hand-me-down gear to the point wear you could see the jocks.

    Mind eraser anyone?

On the skates...look pretty good to me. Keep em if they work....trust me. Skate experiments can be VERY costly...especially if you include the cost of gear whore therapy and counseling.

  4. Just got my new gloves today and I'm pretty happy with them

Eagle PPF: Tufftek shell, White/Navy/White, Digital palms and mesh gussets

Sick dude. Love the mix...especially white fingers. I am a fan of digital palms as well as the MSH2. Enjoy them.

  5. I believe so, but the tags have been removed and it's not as obvious as of the others I've seen/owned. The gussets are digital but the palm is not, it appears to be possibly gray micronash. The number on the thumb may be a good indicator though...

They look like MIAs from the Eagle X72 ripoff!

  6. Yep....it's 5 coats of protectoe clear. Keeps quarters from abrasions, and provides some extra stiffness. For the few extra grams in weight and the labor involved, it's well worth it. The boot on the outside is in like new condition after a full season...just wish I could say the same for the liners. The thing that seems to tear up the liners are the tongues, or at least the mesh material on it. Rips the liner over time. That's why I went to the One90 tongue and thicker black felt on the customs, as well as the grip liner.

  7. I'd take the solid royal off your hands as well.

Ya know...just because someone posts a picture of their gloves...it doesn't mean you have to offer to buy them. They aren't abused dogs looking for new homes.

Most of the vehicles sold at car shows never have "For Sale" in the window... just sayin'.

True... but I just got my customs this weekend, so no "for sale" signs on those puppies.

  8. That is pretty custom. Never seen a glove that looked like a skate before.

    :P

    Responding to JRs comment.

Only customization to gloves are +1 fingers with colors and material. All fit like 15" in fingers, but are 13.5" length

I figured out a way to do a truly custom skate without me being present, but as I don't want to work in hockey retail anymore, I'll probably never act up on it. I could feed the orders through a friendly shop, but would have to figure out how to make it worth my while.

Out of the game? Moved to FL? Boy, I feel out of the loop. Sad day to hear you are out of the biz JR....sad day.

  9. In a lot of these cases, that's exactly what is happening.

I totally understand your point about customs. Foot measurements for size adjustments in length, width, heel, quarters based off foot measurements would truly be customs. I totally agree. For me the last of the XXXX is absolutely perfect in a 9D. I just needed minor adjustments in stiffness (+1). The rest were just add ons (grip liner, reinforced eyelets, double-stitching, and One90 tongue with black felt):

  10. MLS...That is a pretty nice collection...Love those Eagles...How about the stick collection?

    As requested:

OPS...not many...tried a few but not to my liking

I am a two piece guy. Love the One90 (77 flex) and XN10 (whip flex) shafts. Big fan of Thorton and Lidstrom curve. I have been using the Thorton exclusively over the last few months.

So you have two of the same customs and two of the same stock ones that are yellow right? What'd you use to make them yellowish?

That is protectoe clear...about 5 coats. Protects the quarters and makes them a tad stiffer. After a full season of use, they are like new on the exterior. The only signs of wear are the hydrophobic liners...thus the black duct tape you might be able to see on the inside.

  11. Just wondering, why do you need four pairs of XXXX's and two sets of ONE90 elbow's and shin's? Just a gear whore I'm guessing?

Well...yea...but I also travel a ton and I ship my gear from place to place, while having a set of the same gear at home. Originally had 2 pair of XXXXs from last year, but for this year I am going to a new set of customs, one of which you see. The other pair are on their way.

  12. Been on travel quite a bit, but now had a little time this weekend to take pics.

  13. Jason at EWH is the man!

Just got in my custom CP92s in Royal and Navy. Sick.

I also just got my custom XXXX skates. I will be posting all my new stuff on "show it off" real soon. EWH is by far the most responsive and knowledgeable I have seen. All my custom stuff will come from there from now on...got another pair of skates coming from him in about 2 months.

Jason was also the most honest...he warned me it could take 10-12 weeks for the Eagle gloves to arrive...and it took about 10 weeks. They are worth the wait. All I ask for is the job to be done right and to be kept informed on the ETA. They do this well.
