  1. Update: I went with the 1x, and they are indeed very comfortable.  However, they do slide down without attachments, at least when wearing relatively smooth undergarments.  So I'll have to try the garter belt (or there may be some sort of attachment loop in my pants?  I hadn't checked, to be honest.)  The thigh end is pretty rigid, and I have some fierce bruises from where it slid down, but once they're seated right and stay up it should be fine.  Also, my knees don't feel nearly as terrible, so I'll count that a win.

Can you wait a few months? Bauer is launch 2 new pairs of knee pads this year and both look to be evolutions of the current Supreme and 1X. If you can wait I would, since I am going to make a bold assumption that Bauer will only improve those (but they have gone the wrong way before...).

I mean, my gear is not actively on fire, and my usual pack of hoodlums pick up group isn't likely to have regular ice time til the end of April, so yes.  I may go and try on the current mess of options anyway - if it turns out the new iterations aren't as good, I'd still like to know that the old ones are feasible.

  3. Having risen, vaccinated, from the benthic depths of the pandemic, I've realized it's time for new knee pads.  I thought about it last time I played (March 2020, after finally being cleared after my back surgery), but then the pandemic happened and it just wasn't a priority and I hadn't played again til this past Saturday.  I definitely need (kneed?) new (knew?) knee pads/guards.  Right now I am using Bauer Supreme knee guards, which I quite like - they fit well, help up reasonably, stayed up without wrapping them in a kilometer of tape or wearing socks over them, were protective to as far as my average level of play.  But the seams are splitting and the padding is getting battered, so it's time.  I'm down for just buying another pair of the Bauers, but I'm open to suggestions.  My leg pads (Warrior) did come with knee pads, but they were intermediates and just didn't fit my senior-sized leg.  A pal wears the Warrior ones, but she also wears socks over them, and I get so damned hot wearing socks.

I have: a thick thigh and a short leg.  I play at about a C level: a mix of good, sensible people and people who take clappers from the hash marks.  Sometimes when I feel like a butt-kicking, I play for a higher-level group.

Thoughts?  Just stick with the Bauers?  Expand my horizons somewhere?  What are your fave knee guards and why?

  4. Pretty sure at this point virtually every rink in MA is closed. 0 emails from the goalie list for several days now, and all the major adult leagues cancelled/suspended. The gym I work at closed x3 weeks and laid off nearly everyone (jerks), so I'm picking up a second 24h on the ambulance.  I can't say I'm not a bit worried, but I can't just not work, either.

I do wish it was at least warm enough to swim. 😛

  5. Finally successfully played in one (1) game last night! Exhausting, but no pain, and not really as bad as it could've been given I haven't played in a game for nearly 6 months.  I had selected what was listed as a novice/D skate, which of course it wasn't (more C/mixed), did alright, still feel ok this morning. Cautiously optimistic about returning to Saturday hockey with the nerds.

Great news! When I went 6 or so months after surgery to skate it was so awesome just to be on the ice again and then absolutely humbling realizing how out of shape you are, ha!

I moved pretty well but my body is not used to skating AT ALL, nevermind in gear.  Swimming 3600m in a workout means NOTHING to the ice gods, apparently. At least I remembered how to get dressed...

  7. Finally cleared to go back on the ambulance!  Unfortunately that means I'm working Christmas eve (7am Tuesday to 7am Wednesday).  That's OT for the 7 Christmas hours, which is nice, but also means I miss my church's Christmas eve service. 😞 I haven't missed it since before I joined the choir, so I'm feeling a bit down about it.

On the other hand, I'm performing a solo at the solstice service and was told to costume myself "as festively as possible", so I'm tremendously excited for Saturday.

    Geeze... reading this...

I live in western SD and am very fortunate to be within 20 minutes of either my adult hockey rink, the youth hockey association rink or the outdoor ice. So for practices or adult league games, 20 minutes. But... the next closest sheet of ice is 3 hours away, and it goes up from there. The kids’ league play is an average drive of probably 6 hours each way. Some of my daughter’s tournaments are 9-13 hours away each way, and more than once we’ve flown for league games. This weekend is a tournament in WY she’s skating in. 4 hours each way. Hockey is not a school sport here so we miss a lot of school or work... typically leave Thursday night or Friday morning, skate all weekend, and crash into bed Sunday night/Monday morning around 2:00 AM, short nap and then school and work Monday morning...

Adult hockey is local but some of us will participate in adult tournaments and those drive times will vary but minimum is 6 hours each way...

I can’t really identify with complaining about a 2-3 hour drive to play...

That's dedication, on top of the cost to play already!  Do other youth sports have similar issues?  Are there more flexible school options for kids?

  9. The nearest ice rink, I could walk to in 10 minutes or so, and do so to get my skates done.  The rink I typically skate (when healthy) at is a 15-20 minute drive at that time of day (0700 on a Saturday).  I happen to live in an area (metro Boston) where you can't swing a cat and not hit a rink.  Do they all have adult hockey times?  No, but they all absolutely host kids programs.

I would prefer to travel a half hour at most.  I have to get there, get dressed, play, get undressed, and get home.  For a 9pm session/game, more than that is simply not worth it for me.  However, as noted, I have the luxury of many, many rinks in that 30 minute radius.

Before I had a car, I was willing to travel further because the rink had to be transit or foot accessible (with gear).  The year I learned to play, it took me nearly 2 hours to get to the rink. Two buses and a half-mile walk.  Glad I don't have to do that anymore.

  10. I had my 2 week postop yesterday.  I am now allowed to drive, lift up to 15lbs, and swim (within reason).  I can even go back to some desk shifts at my gym job.  I had a nice light swim this morning, and I'm going to go see my horse buddies on Friday.  (Can't ride for another 4-6 weeks).

Brutal. I’ve never heard of a job not having sick time available except like... minimum wage jobs

Officially, my workplace allows up to 48 hours of sick time (Mass. has an earned sick time law, so every employee in the state automatically accrues 1 hour for every 30-40 hours worked), which is 6 days for a normal job, but for a paramedic it's two shifts.

They also get real, real pissy if you have to leave work sick.

  12. I wear 38" jeans and have XL CCM Premier pants.  With the interior belt, they were too small, but I snipped that out and they're more than roomy enough (they have an outer belt and I wear suspenders anyway).  When I started, and weighed more, I had Bauer Classic, which fit quite loose but also have almost no padding up toward the hips, so depending on your pickup group's skill level that may not be a great option.

Check that. Roommate just showed up. Which is fine. Until his IV pump’s alarm is going off every minute for the last 20 minutes. Nurse can’t figure it out.
sleep is going to be hard to come by tonight.

I really think hospitals should start handing out little courtesy kits with sleeping masks and earplugs... 😒

Not sure what exactly you had done, but after my Cervical Spine surgery they had me up & walking around a ton the day after. Def don't overdo it, but I think you might be surprised when they come in and try to get to move around.

I had a lumbar microdiscectomy.  Surgeon said light walking, nothing strenous, no bending/lifting/twisting, no driving nd he'll reevaluate at my postop visit.  I feel pretty good walking.

Waking up after my neck surgery, that was the first thing I noticed that I didn’t have that constant nagging pain through my body. Glad to hear you’re already feeling better!

Oh, yeah, not having excruciating leg pain 90% of the time is great.  I'm trying not to overdo it, but things look good so far.

Thanks. I’ll strictly enforce a no cereal policy.

Just have the nurse put it in your chart: "Patient is allergic to foolishness".

Having been through many surgeries and procedures I feel for you. Especially when you get yourself ready to deal with what’s ahead and then the insurance screws with it. Just adds to the stress of the situation to begin with.
    good luck

Dealing with health insurance definitely sucks. Even if your plan covers 90%, it’s still a chunk of change when the bill is $250,000. Thank god my provider permitted a private hospital to be billed at the in-network rate since it was such a specialized procedure, or else it would have been even more painful.

I've had a couple of surgeries, one of which was more specialized (in the sense, a very limited number of surgeons perform it, though the number is increasing).  For one, I had my parents' insurance still, so that was all dealt with, and really I could've had it at just about any hospital with a competent GI surgeon.  The second one I had medicaid, which paid for everything (thank god), it was just a question of the scheduling wheels turning slowly (meet the surgeon, pre-op appointments, actual surgery, etc, but I was got in early d/t a cancellation).  Now, I have a partially subsidized plan, but it's the first time I've had a plan where my local (5 mins away) hospital is out of network for anything but emergency visits.  The specialty hospital is among the best in the country, so I'm perfectly happy to have it there, it's just that, OR time is a limited resource, especially for a hospital doing such a high volume of orthopedic procedures daily.  It was frustrating to get a date, frantically arrange things, then be told "um, actually..." And have to frantically re-arrange things and tell people "...ok soon, but I don't know when, I'll get back to you".  It might be a week of delay, or two weeks, or a month.  I do get the sense this surgeon will go to bat for me, because when we looked at my MRIs, he got very distressed when my reply to, "How are you walking around not in excruciating pain?" was "Well, I am in pain, but I have a life and no real choice, so I just have to accept it."

The funny thing is, I saw this exact scenario with a patient a few years ago.  He needed some toes amputated, which pretty much any fool with an MD and a set of bolt cutters can do, so he went to Local Hospital, but because of his insurance had to be transferred to a large downtown trauma center, admitted and have the surgery there - and his wife didn't drive.  Absolute nonsense.

Well it looks like I’m not going to be skating anytime soon. I’m not only not getting my drain taken out, but I’ll be getting an additional drain. My current drain only addresses one side of my liver. The new drain will be for the other side.

The potential devastating news I got today is that if the additional drain isn’t successful then I would need surgery to attempt to open my bile ducts. It’s a major operation that could damage the major artery and cause the need for a transplant very soon afterwards.

This wasn’t the information I was planning on getting today.

What a nightmare!  I'm so sorry this is all happening. I hope you get some kind of good news soon, even if it's just "you won't have a roommate this time".
