Best bands that you're not listening to.

Recommended Posts

Its time for me to update my music collection a little and get some fresh stuff to listen to. What are some good bands that maybe are a little under the radar? I am not much of a pop guy and don't really listen to the radio.

Please post the band name, type of music and homepage if they have one.

Heres some of my favorites.

Desa (pop-punkish)

http://www.desadesadesa.com/

http://www.myspace.com/desa

Rx Bandits (ska, pop-punkish, slightly political).

http://www.rxbandits.com

http://www.myspace.com/rxbandits

Sage Francis (Original rap, political).

http://www.STRANGEFAMOUS.com

http://www.myspace.com/sagefracis

Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers (used to be The Refreshments, honkytonkish alternative).

http://www.azpeacemakers.com/

Bad Astronaut (light punk, some acoustic, alternative). Lead singer sings for lagwagon.

Pilot Speed (emo-ish band out of Canada).

http://www.myspace.com/pilotspeed.

Enjoy.

Cartel is a pretty good band. I have been listening to them for a while now. I can see them getting big with their very catchy songs.

At work and effectively blocked from 90% of the Internet so you'll have to research the myspace/sites on your own, but some off the top of my head (and not new by any means) are:

Interpol

Devotchka

The Academy Is...

Gym Class Heroes

Armor for Sleep

Socratic

Abandoned Pools

30 Seconds to Mars

Plain White T's

Wolfmother

HelloGoodbye

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

Yeah, and they put on a great live show. They remind me a lot of New Found Glory before NFG got big.

And I second mack in recommending 30 seconds to mars and plain white t's.

You also might like The Spill Canvas.

if you like it a little harder, they're kind of big but just in case: Disturbed, A Perfect Circle

this doesnt really help with band names, but check out www.pandora.com brilliant site. create your own stations based on artists, genre's you like. create one with bands that you like, and it will play similar songs/artists. you can then tell it whether you like the song/artist or not, skip songs. and you can create different stations if you like different kinds of music.

have it playin almost all the time i'm on the computer.

*Gratitude & New End Original - both Jonah Matranga bands.

Pop-punk/emo-ish.

*The Coup - Political rap. Bit of a hardcore edge, with live guitars &

drums.

*Bouncing Souls - pop-punk in the vein of Lagwagon and other Fat Wreck

Chords bands.

*Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Hard-edge indie-rock.

*Revolution Smile - Alterna-rock.

*Gogol Bordello - Gypsy-influenced punk. Different, but worth checking

out if you're looking for something different.

*Midtown - 'Living Well Is The Best Revenge' is a good album, but I

haven't been as impressed with any of their others.

*Mr. T Experience - 'And The Women Who Love Them (special addition)'

contains one of the best pop/emo-punk EPs recorded (first 8 songs).

*Reggie & The Full Effect - pop-punk

*Zox - Ska-punk, kinda like the RX Bandits.

*Bad Religion - The newer stuff ('Process of Belief' & 'Empire Strikes

First' are probably the most accessible)

*Pretty Girls Make Graves - pop-punk

Sorry no links...I'm feeling lazy

I'm not sure what their websites are, but check out Cartel and OAR.

If theyve been played on MTV then I dont think they fall into the category "that we're not listening to"

One band I would say is The Forecast

I'd say theyre a few steps above local. You can find them on Rhapsody and all that too.

The 'There's a Class For This' video? Yeah, I'm not going to argue against that - not only does it reek of latent homosexuality, but it makes me want to attack the lead-singer's head with a pair of scissors.

Architecture in Helsinki

Bikini Kill

All-time Quarterback

Belle & Sebastian

Blonde Redhead

Cap'n Jazz

Mostly acoustic and lo-fi indie, all really good stuff.

If you like the Bandits check out Streetlight Manifesto

-I was wondering what happened to Catch 22! I used to listen to them all the time.

-Cute is what we aim for is a little too emo for me. Sounds a lot like The Starting line.

Bad Religion is way oldschool. They actually got me into punk music along with Millencolin, Lagwagon and 10 Foot Pole. Even their old stuff is good. I expand my (clean) vocabulary with every song lol.

These are older bands, but I'd call them the two most under-rated bands in Rock History, especially since most people in the US consider them to be one-hit wonders. However, they are both hard rocking bands with great lyrics and melodies.

The first one recently had their "Live And Dangerous" album voted as the best live album ever by the readers of Musician or Guitar (or something). (I don't agree with that -- I'd go with the "Allman Brothers at Fillmore East".)

The second band's first three albums went 3-1-2 in the UK, and they were somewhat akin to the Grateful Dead in terms of their popularity live.

Thin Lizzy

Big Country
