Blackstone Flat-Bottom V Thread

Recommended Posts

There is no such thing as Blademaster flat bottom.

The stores around me in Southern NH lie to their customers when they ask if they do the FBV. They are trying to pass of the counterfeit BFD as the real FBV, even call it the FBV. But customers aren't stupid, once they skate on the BFD, they know something isn't right.

jimmy - how would you describe the differences between the two?

90/75 to 95/1 is a pretty drastic jump IMO. Did you try 95/75 or 100/75?

I wanted to try a drastic jump. I really enjoy the bite. I've used the 90/75 during the summer.

So this equipment manager on the Penguins has a twitter account and posts numerous pictures of him sharpening their skates. Can you tell by looking at the equipment if any of the Pens are using FBV?

Well he does have a portable black stone machine in the one picture. He could be using that for FBV. There was a video posted a while back with the Pen's equipment manager and I am pretty sure I saw some spinners in the back ground. I would assume their must be some members on the penguins that use FBV. Last I heard, Crosby was using a 1/2 ROH.

I spoke with the trainer from Caps one day when he was hanging out at our rink for his son's hockey game and I specifically asked him how many guys on the Caps were using FBV and the only person on the Caps is Jason Chimera. I wonder how many pros are actually using and have stuck with it. I know the Caps are a small sample group, but I'm surprised only one actually likes FBV. Of course Chimera's main thing is his skating so I guess it makes sense.

i guess the mods didn't like the photo of cooke sharpening his skates. Oh well.

No, we don't like it when people troll topics looking to start fights.

That picture was posted earlier in this thread, at least once.

Wasn't it the Penguins list, showing how all the skaters' skates were sharpened, that was posted just recently in a thread here?

I've just started using the 95/75 spinner on my own and a teamate's skates. We are both coming from 1/2" ROH. He felt as though there was a reduction in bite with the 95/75, but really liked the glide. With that said, he wants to buy a spinner for when I do his skates-would 100/50 or 100/75 be the best bet?

I would go 100/75, he is sure to feel more bite with that. Most of my guys thought that 95/75 had more bite than 100/50.

To be honest, I haven't used it. I'm only going off what most of my guys have said. I had 100/50, 90/75 and 100/75. Most guys thought the first two needed a little more bite and the last one bit too much, so I ordered the 95/75 and they love it. My best guess is that it will be more like 3/8-7/16. I only have one guy on my team that prefers the 100/50 and he never liked his skates right after having them sharpened. He always thought they were too sharp until now.

I definitely feel like the 95/75 has more bite than the 100/50. I personally have a hard time comparing FBV cuts to ROH because to me the feel is significantly different.

I'm a relatively new skater and just started realizing there are different hollows and cuts. Went from a 1/2" to a 5/8" and was loving it then I tried a 5/8" equivalent for FBV the past 2 times on the ice and it feels very different. Seems to have less bite than 5/8" but not really comparable.

Currently using 100/50, I prefer something that sticks just a little better. I'm thinking of 100/75 or 95/75. Either way, noicingsports does a great job.

I don't know about now, but when he was with Edmonton, Chimera had great straight-line top-end speed, but normal acceleration (he is a pretty big guy) and much below-average agility. So FBV might help him in the turns while preserving his strength (the top-end speed).
