All new gear, what would you get?

Recommended Posts

So I've been wanting new gear for awhile now but didn't want to spend the money.  I just got an unexpected bonus check so I'm thinking it's going to all new gear.  I know I'm picking up super tacks  skates and a rbz revolution stick  but other than that I haven't put much thought into it.  So just for fun what would you guys pick up for all new gear if you could.

Interesting question. I find myself more on the stick with what works spectrum. When my helmet was lost, I scoured to find an old CCM H2 and a JOFA 381 cage to pair with it. I knew it fit, I liked it, and I liked the look. Though if I had to get new stuff I would probably try some smaller manufacturers (True, Verbero, etc.)

I'm assuming this is limited to products currently out on the market, so here's what I'd go for.

Helmet - Bauer IMS 9.0

Coming from the Nike Bauer 5500s, of all of the helmets I've tried on, this one felt and fit the best.  In fact, it fit so well that I actually bought one last week to replace those old things.  I'm keeping my 5500s around for now in case the 9.0 ends up not working out for me, though.

Protective - Mix of CCM and Sherwood

I'm very attached to my Reebok shin guards, so I'd have to continue with the Tacks line there, though I wouldn't be thrilled given that they're much less comfortable.  I absolutely love my Warrior shoulder pads, and the only thing I like that comes close are the Sherwood 5030s.  Don't really need the extra protection at the level I play.  Elbows?  I really have no idea.  Haven't tried on enough new ones yet, and I pretty much hated all the ones I've tried on.

Gloves - Warrior QRL Pro

I really like the CCM 4-Roll III, Easton HSX, and STX Surgeon 500, but the Warriors win on account of being comfy, flexible, and - this is crucial - being able to customize the colors.  The CCM 4-Roll IIIs are a close second, though. I honestly think they're the best gloves CCM has ever made.

Stick - True XCore 7/Bauer Vapor X900

While I'm pretty attached to the Vapor line, the proclaimed wood-like feel of the XCore line is very, very intriguing.  I left the top-of-the-line sticks off this list because there's no way in hell I'm paying $300 for a stick.  Ever.  Maybe if they use myrrh in the resin, and even then...

Pants - Bauer Supreme TotalOne / MX3

I still see my original TotalOne girdle for sale in many places, so I'm not sure if that counts.  If not, the obvious choice would be the MX3.  I stick with what works, though I admit to having never tried on the MX3s before.  The NXG was no bueno, so I'm apprehensive.

Skates  - CCM Ribcore 50K

This one was easy, since I've had them for over a year now, and I love 'em.  I've been wearing the Reebok K line for about five years now, and I'm pretty sure there isn't another skate out there that fits me as well.

Sorry.  Hope that wasn't too long.

this is mainly due to the fact that being in Australia, Gear on the ground (read LHS) have very very limited stock - and even then limited suppliers.

So if i had option for completely new gear at once in a perfect world. I would try on as much different stuff as possible. As im sure different brands fit slightly differently - For EG we have all seen comments about skates being true to size - essentially one brand of skate may say size 7 aswell as another brand size 7 but completely different fit.

Skates - i would go custom fit. - Would buy VH skates.

Helmet - over the past helmets i have had i think i have more a 'ccm' fit head - so would go a Resistance helmet (but once again the fits could have changed since my last purchase).

With protective gear, i usually go for the beefiest shins/elbows - as id rather feel they are heavier, but know im find when landing on elbows/knees rather then not feel them at all but more likely of injury.

Sticks - I almost always buy 'old stock' or last years models - But the new STX RX2 definitely has me curious with the shaft design.

Honestly there's not much I'd change. Skates, chest protector, neck guard, pants, and gloves/pads are all custom. Mask is stock but painted. Knee pads are perfect. Sticks are limited SMU from TotalHockey (and I've literally bought the last of the stock). So I guess uh... I'd buy a different jock? I mean, I already did but its literally too big to fit in my pants (insert joke here).

I'm in the same boat. The only thing I think I'd upgrade is my skates. Overall, I'm happy with my S180s, the only thing I'd love to have is the Comfort Edge since I get some wear on my right ankle area from the top of my skate. I was able to stop it with a Bunga pad, but I'd like to have a pair of S190s or 1Ss to see if the issue stopped. I guess I'd like to try the True a.5.2 SBP over my a5.2 to see if there's a big difference. Other than that, I'm super happy with my gear.

Protective, HD3

Gloves, QRL3 or QL290

I'm pretty happy with my current setup, but here's some stuff I'd look at if I had to replace some gear:

Helmet: I'd probably try to find another E700 since it's light, comfortable and breathes well, but if that weren't available I'd consider the REAKT, REAKT 100 or an IMS 11 or 7 as those all fit me pretty well. I'd also try on everything else available of course before making a final decision.

Cage: Reakt titanium

Visor (if reffing): Bauer ProClip HDO or CCM Revision

Elbows: Love my Warrior Projekt elbows and they'd be very hard to replace (which is why I have a couple spares in my closet), but if I had to get something new I'd look at the STX Surgeon 500, CCM RBZ and CCM QLTs.

Shoulders: Again, I'd be hard pressed to let go of my Farrell H600 pads - I'd probably try to wait to see what Dan Farrell produces now that he's working with Verbero. The Gator knock off is an option I suppose, but I'd be more likely to consider the new CCM QLT, Vapor 1X or Surgeon 500 if I needed something immediately and couldn't wait for the Farrell/Verbero product to come out.

Gloves: Surgeon 500, Warrior QRL or CCM QLT would be the three I'd seriously consider if I needed to replace my Warrior Projekts and money was no object.

Pants: I like my Warrior Projekt girdle so I'd probably take a close look at the Warrior Dynasty (I also hear there will be a lot of new options next Spring). I like my old Supreme shell and the closest thing out to it right now is the Bauer Nexus shell; so I'd grab that for a shell.

Shins: CCM RBZ (discontinued, but only a few months ago; so there should be plenty of pads still available at clearance prices) - I prefer the CCM U+ CL pads I have for roller right now to anything I've used in the past. The RBZ improved on the U+ CL because they used more comfortable neoprene straps. I don't think I'd move to the new CCM QLTs because I tried them on and the strapping system was changed and the top strap felt quite short for me - the overall fit was OK, but not quite as good as the old CL and the RBZ.

Skates: Custom VH if money is no object. On my current budget, I'd try to track down more Mako 2's in my size (which is actually what I'm trying to do...I picked up new Mako 2's a little over a month ago, but will stockpile a few if I find them in my size and in new or like new condition for a good price).

Sticks: Custom Warrior QRL with either a Smyth or Gionta curve.

Jocks/Undershirts and Socks: Bauer Elite with 37.5

Helmet: CCM Resistance

Shoulders: CCM RBZ 130 LE

If I had to replace everything tomorrow from retail...

Skates: CCM Super tacks

Helmet: Bauer RE-AKT w/ Oakley VR903

Shoulder: Bauer APX2

Elbow: CCM Tacks

Shin: CCM Tacks

Gloves: Bauer 1N

Pants: Bauer 1N

Stick: Bauer 1N and True Xcore9

I've been looking at the original RE-AKT helmet myself. I tried it on and just felt right. Hard to justify $200 though. I'll figure it out. Much nicer and lighter than my M11. And I'm a big M11 fan.

I did recently upgrade elbow pads. I will sing the praises of the STX Surgeon 500 every day. I have bony girl arms and these are the only ones that fit right and won't side down. Out of habit, I try to adjust them but they don't need adjusting.

realistically the only thing I need right now are shins as both my pairs are well worn, and its the piece I'm hardest on. that said, I attend SJ and WF secondarily to check out new gear, and have developed a chart of "whats next"

Helmet: LOVED the feel of the fitlite 3DS helmet. I was worried that they would change too much about it when it ported to CCM, and had been stock piling some old 11/7k on clearance places. I wasn't as impressed by the first fitlite that released but the new one was the most comfortable helmet ive put on, and I will be acquiring one, likely early next year about tax return/bonus time.

Shoulders: I'm ok here too at the moment. if I were to purchase new shoulders itd likely be something in the QLT line. currently mostly using my fit05 until I shed a bit of excess weight that's keeping me out of my RBZ

Bows: super good here at this time. Love RBZ bows, will probably look to acquire a few more pairs to stash.

pants: will need a second pair here soon, as its the only piece I have no backup for. Ive tried the QLT line in stores, as well as some bauer and Easton lines. Currently looking at something mid range QLT. my CL pants are still in fairly good shape.

Shins: there is some definite need here. my RBZ have a crack in the knee and my RBZ150 have some damage as well. WIll probably try to acquire two new shin pairs here soon, as its the piece I'm hardest on apparently. WIll look to get some new 1X shins, and probably a clearance RBZ. not to big on the changes they have made to the RBZ line.

Gloves: some need here for a pair or two, although I have 2 pairs in decent shape and 1 in poor shape. will look at QLT 290, QRL as the top contenders.

skates: good here, maybe look at some Supertacks in a year.

Sticks: ive pared down to 6 total (3 ice, 3 inline) and have sold or will be selling the rest of mine save a few beat up sticks for basement use. That said, after SJ, the QRL stick will be first purchase when one of my 6 breaks.

Roller: I'm in need of new inline pants and wheels soon, not sure where I'm going on pants yet, but will be trying out konixx wheels.

ive given myself a budget of 100 per month for upgrades, not because I necessarily need to budget, but because it will help keep me from just buying everything, and keep my basement in order.

Probably just a helmet. I seem to have a hard time with sweating. I am currently in an 11k but I would try either that IMS 9 or re akt 75.

I tried an IMS 9.0 when I was looking and really liked it, it just didn't fit me great, though. I ended up with an IMS 11.0, my only complaint is that it takes quite a while to dry out, especially the Poron XRD portions. It's an absolutely incredible upgrade from the 5.0 I had prior, though, that thing was brutally hot.

It's an odd feeling walking into the store, taking a look around for 10 minutes and walking back out because they don't actually sell anything you want.

this is awesome to hear.  i just grabbed a pair of the 48K's under some "tent" this past weekend.  been skating in the RBZ 75s.   went out with my little guys to a public skate yesterday to give them a spin.  going to have to go back and have ONE spot over my left big toe punched out tho.  thats the only spot that hurt. Now I really need to get out for a game and give them the REAL test without all those civilians around...

My next big purchase will probably be a pair of VH wheels, but I'm in no hurry to drop just shy of a grand on skates. Some new protective wouldn't hurt either - I've been itching to try CL shoulders for a long time now, but I can't justify the expense.

Just bought new stuff for a second bag in FL. Everything old stock. Bauer x80 shins, Easton c5.0 shoulder pads, Bauer vapor x80 pants, Easton e700 helmet with a Bauer reakt cage. The best of the lot was the cheapie  Ccm qlt 230 elbows which are actually the first pair of pads that have stayed in place in 15 years. I'm leaving my rbk/ jofa elbows and shins in NY. Other than that I ebayed my stock nxg skates and am skating on a pair of ncaa pro stock team nxg's. Full tongue and ls3 steel, better padding and stiffer boot. No lace bite from these yet. I always buy last year's sticks on clearance... Bauer vapor x100 and now just bought 2 Bauer vapor x900's. It all fits well, is light, protective and best of all comparatively inexpensive.

Skates: Only in a perfect world could I move away from Bauer for a pair of CCM Super Tacks

Stick: Easton Synergy GX. I held one of these as Hockey Giant in NJ yesterday I like it a lot.

Helmet: Bauer Re-Akt 100

Shoulders: Vapor 1X

imho there is only one thing that counts - SKATES. Everything else you can get by with though admittedly I am partial to top end Rbk gear (11k elbows, 9k girdle, 20k shins) but if your skates give you grief then you are either off the ice or you can never skate as well as you could. If I had the coin I'd drop it all on some VH skates but first would go to a foot specialist and have custom foot molds made (no 3D scanner available in my country) and then ship these to VH for them to use as lasts for a perfect, customised build.
