Edges wear unevenly

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My edges wear unevenly from front to back - is it normal? I have seen a few videos - specialist said that good player uses whole blade, so it should be no difference between sharpeness on front and on the back of the blade.

Before injury I hade a good technique and had no difference (or did not noticed).

Does someone knows about blades of a pro-level skaters? what do they have?

thanks

Aren't you mostly using the front of your blade for stops and the back half of your blade for cuts and turns, etc.?  I'd imagine (just a guess) that the act of stopping/sliding the blade across the ice is way more friction and therefore dulling than the stuff you typically use the back of your blade for.  Just a theory.

thats all right, but there is another theory that more skilled person uses whole gliding surfase incl. back porition of the blade. therefore blade got completely dull everywhere (NHL athelete)

What did you injure?  Did you get new skates since the injury?  Wearing out the front is likely an indication you aren't bending your knees while skating.  If you skate straight legged, you don't get full extension on your strides, and skate mostly on the front half of your skates (because you have to lean forwards to skate and tip your center of gravity over your toes)  If your knees are bent, you keep your center over the middle of your stride and use all of your blade. So to fix that you need to bend your knees more.  If that's a problem because of your injury, putting a forward profile on the blades might help you get more of it on the ice.

You blades don't wear down faster in the front from skating. That is from sharpening. Your sharpener applies more pressure at the beginning of his/her passes when they first contact the wheel. Over time, the toe area rounds. You see it all the time. As for wear, I tend to get nicks on the toes and heels alot as do most players because they are more exposed. If a sharpener tries to take them out completely every sharpening (I don't usually) without removing steel from the middle of the blade as well, then over time the profile will change.

He's saying his edges wear out and dull faster in the front than the back.  Not that the steel is wearing down.

Yes, the edges wear unevenly, completely normal for ALL skaters, beginner to pro.  Inside edges wear more, especially at the front, dominant side wears more than weak side, outside heels wear more than inside as well.

Do you know what thickness of steel you are talking about though? It's miniscule. Most of the rounding of the blade over the life of the steel is due to the sharpener, not what happens on the ice. I agree that the edges can wear unevenly, but that's not going to change the profile.

My friend was showing me his blades and saying he didn't have time to get them sharpened.

I asked him do you use your outside edge?  He's Bern skating and playing hockey for a couple of years.  I've watched him and I know he doesn't use his outside edges.

He switched the runners so his inside edges are now his outside edges.

Now he has an edge lol.
