In need of a new stick

Recommended Posts

Hey boys, just looking for a little advice here.

All last season I used a Sher-Wood Rekker EK60 and boy was it sick. I felt like I could dangle through everyone, and honestly it racked me up a lot of points. The one problem I was having though was the shooting aspect, as it never really felt like I could take a super hard shot with it. On the very last game of last season (March 2018) I broke my EK60, so I picked up a CCM RBZ Speedburner because they were 60% off and they had my curve and flex. I had heard good things about the shot power, and since both sticks had lively blades I thought there would be minimal adjustments to be made. Boy was I wrong... I just can’t get used to this stick. I’ve probably played around 20 games with it over the summer and now into this season, as well as many stick and puck sessions, and it’s just not cutting it. While the shot power is excellent, I can’t dangle, my passing it off, and I just can’t even feel the puck on my blade. I feel like this stick is the reason I can’t score as much this season. So tomorrow I’m going to head out to my local hockey shop, and I need some advice on a new stick. I want to go with a Sher-Wood again but they’re all out of Rekker EK60’s so I’d have to go with the EK365. I’m also considering the Warrior Covert QRL since they may be on sale now. Any suggestions from you guys?

From what I've read, the Ek365 has the same blade as the EK60, so puck feel should be similar. Having used both sticks, personally, I like the QRL better. The main reason is because it plays more whippy, so I can load up shots a lot easier and quicker. But not everyone likes that whippiness.

One of the reasons you may be having difficulty stickhandling could be because of the difference in lies. Every stock CCM stick I own has a higher lie when compared to most other brands. So the CCM may play a little longer than it actually is, and thus affects your stickhandling. The lie could also be why you're not getting as much power on your shot. Lower lie, a little more difficult to get over the stick and generate whip.

Any way the stock QRL should have the same lie as the Sherwood, so you should be good either way in that respect.

My 2 cents. It's worth what you paid.

Thanks man, I’ll take a look at the QRL’s this morning. The store website says they’re on sale for 170$ CAD. Another thing that caught my attention was the 2017 supreme 1s although it would be more expensive. Without a doubt it would be easy for me to get used to that stick because I’ve been using the supreme for years. At this point I sort of what to go back to a dampened puck feel because it feels to me like I’ll have more control with it. I’ve just heard great things about the QRL and that stickhandling is phenomenal with it. At this point puck control is at thr very top of my list in terms of priority, before shot power. I just want to get back to breaking ankles again

Good point, I just don’t feel comfortable with this speed burner though. Maybe it’s a mental thing

I’d look at the Nexus before the Supreme if puck feel is what you’re looking for. I’ve also had good luck with the Tacks line as the puck seems to really stick to that blade.

RBZ, Speedburner, etc have notoriously (relatively) awful puck feel and are best suited for standing in place and ripping one timers. The blades are literally hollow with no to minimal foam so i get where you’re coming from.

Yeah, feels like the only thing I'm useful for out there is just firing pucks at the net. There's a few Nexus 1N pro stocks around locally so I'm going to check those out. Went to the shooting gallery this morning and tried out 5 sticks: QRL, EK365, True XC9, 1S, and Ribcor ASY. For shooting my favourite was the QRL, the release was absolutely lethal on that thing. Just wish I could take em out on the ice and stickhandle around for a while...
