  1. Don't show up to open hockey without a helmet.

One guy did that the other night, and skated the whole time with no helmet. We couldn't believe someone actually did that, one of the guys asked him and he said he forgot it. I was really hoping he would get kicked off the ice, but it was late and the only person left working there wasn't paying any attention.

  2. Question: how much do you think this sharpening would benefit a beginner player? I've only been playing a few months and I'm still not a great skater - solid going forwards and stopping, not so great going backwards or with fast changes of direction. Would it not do much because I'm not a good enough skater to really use my edges well, or would the extra speed give me some benefit?

I'd wait to change, get more used to the regular edges and later get FBV.

Start driving your mom's 1986 Corolla before you step up to your dad's Porsche.

While I agree with the second statement I dont see how well it stands up as an analogy.

Learning to skate and using your edges is a lot easier when you don't add additional speed to the mix. I've seen plenty of guys, in coaching, that get going fast and go in hard to the boards because they can't turn or stop... Let's add some extra speed to that, great.

I hadn't thought of that, good point. I don't have that problem now, but I can definitely see myself doing that if I was going faster. I'll hold off on it for now.

  4. Both seems like overkill.

Probably is, but the only velcro the store had in the size I wanted was the industrial strength stuff (with adhesive backing). But it said the adhesive didn't stick to fabric, so I used the glue too.

I've been out on the ice once since I added the extra velcro and it worked great - no signs whatsoever of the velcro pulling off, and my jersey is no longer sticking to my elbow pads.

  5. Cut off the padding on the top of my shinguards. They usually end up sticking out of the top of my socks and I hate this, so they're gone.

Replaced the terrible original runners on my Tacks with Pro E's.

Don't like helmet ear pieces, so those are out.

Maybe I have a weirdly shaped head, but helmet padding never really feels comfortable around certain parts of my cranium, so I usually shave out some of the foam accordingly.

It's not really a mod, but I frequently switch back and forth between cage and visor depending on mood and current facial injury state.

Huh? I'm having a hard time picturing this. My hockey socks go about halfway up my thigh, and my shinguards are certainly much shorter than that.

And for those curious, today I bought some industrial strength velcro and some of the E-6000 glue that was recommended - gonna try that out after hockey tomorrow morning.

  6. Shorten the strap itself to pull the velcro back where it needs to be. I ended up just cutting a piece out of the strap and sewing it back together.

Or you can just cut off the extra velcro on the end of the strap.

Any fabric/craft place should have all the different types of velcro but I think forbs02 has an easier solution. I'd just get an idea of how big the strap is (measure or estimate, an inch, 2 inches, etc), then fold the strap over itself backwards and sew it to itself therefore shortening it by however much you overlapped it... this would be much easier than messing w/ the velcro (I've done both variations on various elbow pads in the past due to my skinny arms, luckily I have finally found a pair that fits without modification, CCM Vector 08, I love them). Other than the overlapping method you could also just trim the excess strap off and then sew on a new piece of velcro to the strap so it fits snug.

Yeah, those solutions involve sewing...not sure how well that would go. Hopefully I'll figure something out this weekend, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

  7. Is the elbow pad hard plastic where the velcro will be attached to? If so then the adhesive velcro should hold just fine, I'd suggest going w/ the industrial strength one just to be safe. If it's fabric where the velcro will attach then you may want to look into the fuse-able velcro which is basically an iron on adhesive, it's supposed to hold really well but I have no first hand experience with it so can't say how it would work. I'd just go w/ the industrial strength sticky back velcro... clean the area really well first w/ some rubbing alcohol, then you may even want to heat it up real quick w/ a hair dryer b/c that will help the glue adhere better. Also if the pad is curved/contoured then you may want to cut the velcro into strips to better flow with the shape of the pad (also this way if part of the velcro does come loose down the road you won't loose all of the velcro but rather just a section).

    Good luck.

No, it's fabric of some sort. The elbow pads are Easton Synergy ST4's and I need to add the velcro to the upper bicep part. In the picture below, it's the area just to the left of the Easton E logo on the blue part.

Any idea where I can buy industrial strength or fuseable velcro? Home Depot? Walmart?

  8. Not something I've done, but something I want to do and I'm hoping one of you can give me some advice.

On my elbow pads one of the velcro straps is too long for the velcro on the pad itself (ie, when I do it up, the end of the strap goes past the velcro on the pad and just hangs off). And then that extra bit of velcro gets caught up in my jersey and annoys me. So I want to add some velcro to the pad itself for the strap to stick to - any ideas on how to attach the velcro? I was thinking hot glue gun. The velcro does have a sticky backing to it, but I'm not sure that adhesive will hold up well enough.

  9. bought a mission intake fusion. who else here uses different size cages and bucket? i wear L sized helmets but had to go down to a M cage for it to fit correctly.

I also have a large intake and I have a medium 9500 cage on it. This is my first foray into hockey so I have no idea if it's common but DarkStar fitted me for all my gear and he knows what he's doing :)
