Vapor 10 Pants

Hey,

I've had the Vapor 10 pants well for about 2 seasons now and the outer protection belt is really starting to bother me, so I was just wondering since its connected inside the pants by some nylon straps if I cut those straps to remove it, 1. Will there still be enough protection without it on? and 2. Will it do anything to the pants, structurally besides the cutting of the nylon straps?
