Pants Vs. Girdle

I've been skating in a pair of franklin pants for about 2.5 years, they were NHL pro returns from the rangers and I got them for free and there great pants. As of late, i've been beginning to notice more and more players wearing a Girdle with a shell instead of pants and I was just wondering what some of the pros and cons of this were and the main differences between the two.

Girdle/shell combo is lighter than any pant that you can find. Pants are more protective. Fit is the 3rd factor as the girdle is obviously more form-fitting but you can get pants like the old vapor series or top-end RBK if you like the snug fit.
