NHL 2005 Help

Well i have had NHL 05 for awhile now, but it never works. Like it loads up to the main screens and stuff, but i can never control the thing i want ie// season etc... the bar just keeps skipping through the main menu and stuff like wack.

Anybody help me on this one?
