Novice Hockey Web Site

Recommended Posts

My wife is just starting to get into the hockey thing and has many questions. Can anyone recomend a good website that can help her understand the game. I can answer many of her questions, but she did get me to think about the game. To a newbie, hockey has many complex aspects. Maybe this is why NASCAR is more popular :-)

Here are some areas she could use some help with (using her terms):

Everyone seems to be all over the place. How do you know where to be on the ice?

What are the names of all of the posistions?

How does the coach know when to make player changes?

What are all of the red dots on the ice?

What are the lines used for (red and blue)?

What is a crease and why does the goalie have blue ice under him?

How does the ref know where to have a face off?

How many players can be on the ice?

Why do we have to travel all over just to play (I wonder this one, myself)?

Why does the clock stop on some plays, and not on others?

Q. Everyone seems to be all over the place. How do you know where to be on the ice?

A. When you find out, can you tell the rest of my team?

Q. What are the names of all of the posistions?

A. Goalie (he has the most pads), Puck Hog(everyone else)

Q. How does the coach know when to make player changes?

A. When we get scored on

Q. What are all of the red dots on the ice?

A. Resedue from past brawls

Q. What are the lines used for (red and blue)?

A. To make you trip when you cross it

Q. What is a crease and why does the goalie have blue ice under him?

A. Thats from the Poweraide he is drinking.

Q. How does the ref know where to have a face off?

A. He goes to the face off dot that is farthest from the one you are lined up at.

Q. How many players can be on the ice?

A. On my team 5, 1 goalie, 4 Puck hogs. 6th player is in the Box

Q. Why do we have to travel all over just to play (I wonder this one, myself)?

A. To mooch on other people's ice time.

Q. Why does the clock stop on some plays, and not on others?

A. Because the scorekeeper is talking to his girlfriend

How many of these have you not been able to answer?

BTW if you are a youth coach like me, this book is invaluable. It goes into some philosophies that has carried over to the other sports I have begun to coach. Got it last year as I started to begin helping to coach hockey.

Is that really from a book? If it is, I've got to read it just for the humor. I'm going to still be laughing about this an hour from now. Damn that was funny. LMAO!!!!!
