how important is it to use a stone on the blades before each skate?

I don't think it is necessary to go over your blades with a stone everytime you skate. The only time I use a stone is before my first skate after a fresh sharpening. The only reason why I do this is because my lhs does not stone the blades after sharpening them, and there are ussually burrs on the edges.

i always wondered how a nick in the middle of a blade could impact performance. if the blade before and after the nick is touching the ice, what damage could it possibly do?

You could lose your balance easily and end up fall on ur @$$, espespeialy when turing and stopping.
