Is there a chance that the motor is burned out and that the RPM is not what it should be? You need the high rpm to cut metal cleanly. Too low an RPM and you have to push the blades into the wheel too much.

And yes, I only do my own blades so I know the setup well, but I think in general you can know when you are done grinding (or when you need to stop and redress the stone because you are doing no more good) by looking at the shower of sparks coming from the blade.
