artificial ice

It's not cheap. A friend of mine had the stuff instead in his detached garage, we don't skate on it because it knocks hell out of your blades. But it's great for getting your stick out and working on handling, passing, and shooting.

I was going to have synthetic ice installed in my backyard, since I ALWAYS used to skate on Ozzie Ice's synthetic, but the Arizona sun would literally just melt the plastic or whatever formula, so I setlled for an abrasive concrete with a coating on it, similiar to Casey at the Bat in AZ, its alot of fun to do off ice in my back yard, I love it...

Interesting. What did you coat the concrete with.

If you only want to stickhandle or shoot, I would think some sort of thick epoxy coating on a concrete or asphault surface should work just as well. It would have to be slick enough to stickhandle a puck, though.

I am thinking about building a 40 X 70 outdoor rink in Atlanta in an outdoor setting. I will need to put up dasher boards and am looking for ideas on a covering system to keep dirt pollen rain etc. off it. I am thinking about multiple 40 X 20 tarps on multiple hand crank system but I am struggling with how to remove the water before the tarp can be rolled back up

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Its probably better to get a plastic type of surface that you can spary with silicon spray, thats what I do and it works well but I don't use my skates on it of course.

I doubt youd be able to stop on it and once it gets torn up a puck wouldn't run very smoothly and i also imagine it would dull blades VERY quickley

But those are only guesses, i have never been on one before

yeah i noticed on all the movies about it, he only stops once, and it looks very unnatural. Looks like it would be more for recreational skating, such as open skate, rather than hockey.
