Toskala or Nabakov

Recommended Posts

Nabby makes $5 mil. Toskala makes $1.75 mil. With that being said, Nabby has proven himself over a longer period of time. They're the same age (I think), yet Nabby has much more experience. It all comes down to if Wilson and the front office want to gamble. They could trade Nabby and presumably get something good in return. It would also free up $5 mil for the cap, which they could sign another player with. If they play it safe they'll stay with Nabby.

Then again, how rich is the demand for starter goalies; I'm starting to get nervous about Wilson waiting this long to really go for a trade, but then again he had a lot of players to sign along with looking for another winger for Thorton. I'm getting nervous about this situation.

Trade either:

Nabokov to Detroit for Robert Lang amd picks

or

Toskala to Detroit for Jason Williams (once signed) and picks

Reason being is that Lang's cap number is around 3.5mil , Williams' is (presumably) going to be around 1mil. Closer cap numbers to each goaltender.

It's gotten to the point where I think they want to trade one, since they have some good talent in prospects. Also, they have 33.7416 committed in salary with 2 undisclosed, but under 1M, contracts (Patrick Traverse and Doug Murray), with Bell, Ehrhoff, Rissmiller, Schaefer, and Smith still RFA's. Especially if we get rid of Nabby's 5M, we got LOTS of spending money for free agents, so I'm skeptical on the wisdom of Wilson not making any big splashes or any real inquiries, that I know of, into some of the big free agents.

Who do you guys think we should go for?

San Jose has to get better on the blue line. But that's gonna be difficult, since most teams with d-men that could be traded mostly all have good goalies. So if they want to get better on the blue line, they're gonna have to give something good for it. Maybe a good prospect like Steve Bernier or Milan Michalek. Some rumors Pat Marleau leaving town in a trade for a d-man, but I doubt it very much. It's unlikely they'll trade their captain, even if he's not their no.1 center anymore.

I think Nabby is the better goalie but neither are awesome and you have to try and dump the high priced player first. When you consider most of the teams logically interested, mainly Detroit, SJ could get a great return if they add a defensive prospect in the deal that could be developed or later traded. Just an idea to make the contracts fit together a little better.

But there are a few good goalies on the market right now, and Anaheim is in basically the same situation. I cant see a good team situation out there where we should go for a trade though.
