Graf Ultra G5

Recommended Posts

Just got the new Graf Ultra G5.Very light, especially compared to the G9's I have been wearing. My only concern is the tongue. It is quite thick and that makes it hard to tie the top eyelet tight enough. The result is that i feel i have too big a space around my ankle.I haven'e skated in them yet, so maybe it's just the initial stiffness.Anyone out there tried them yet and experienced this?

I've been skating on these for about two weeks now. I haven't had any trouble with not being able to tie tight at the top. In fact, I've found I need to keep them somewhat loose at the top to enable enough flex.

Perhaps a slightly thicker sock would help and make sure you bake them if you haven't.

Yes,they are baked. It is probably just the initial stiffness. How do you like them? The G9's were the most comfortable skate I have ever worn but theywere heavy and always waterlogged. These seem to feel just as comfortable.Just waiting for the silicone to dry.

A lot of the new light and stiff boots have a shape moulded into them from the back tendon and heel forward. They're so strong they act like a leaf spring or specifically like a bow.

The sides don't want to bend in and the laces are strung between them hitting a smaller portion of the toung. And they all say not to lace them tight at top when you cook them.

If there's no padding at the inside top, they'll whack you pretty hard. Sometimes they mould to you sometimes they don't. Physically bending them can help in some instances. I haven't tried on the G5s to see what they're like.

What skates have you tried that had this issue? Your explaination makes sense.I guess I will have to tape them if they don't mold better to my ankle. This would seem to be a design flaw though, wouldn't you say? Or just a question of sacrificing one element to improve another?

I really love them so far! Used to be on the old G5's. Nice and light and fit me really good. These skates feel different from my older skates - you use your ankles alot more which I think is the purpose of the lower cut on them.

Funny thing with the thick tongue - I have a little lace bite on my inside ankle, right on the top. You'd think with the thick tongue, that would not be an issue.
