Outsole Holes

I didn't want to hi-jack another thread...

What function, if any, do the holes drilled into the outsoles on pro skates perform. Why do pro skates have them and not consumer skates? Do the holes affect durability/longevity?

I know some Easton and Mission consumer skates now have "vents" built into the outsole. Is this essentially the same as the holes drilled into pro Bauer/CCM skates?

Moisture can escape from the boot...so, skates dry out faster, less odor. I assume they'd also be lighter if all the moisture wasn't stuck in the boot.
