Car Help

Recommended Posts

I have a 99 Infiniti QX4. So far there have been no major problems with it. Lately the alarm has been going off spontaneously. Today alone it has gone off five time. What will happen is that the car will be left alone, and all of a sudden the locks start opening and closing, and then the alarm goes off. I have next to no knowledge on cars- shit it just went off again- so this is confusing the hell out of me. Its also really annoying and I'm sure my neighbors hate me. Is there a way that I can fix this problem without having to take it into the shop? Thanks.

see if you can find any sort of kill switch for the alarm?... it's either be under the steering wheel, hidden underneath... or some place under the hood.. usually where any sort of horn, etc is. That used to happen to my old Dodge Avenger... thing that sucks is- it shuts the alarm off completely.

some aftermarket car alarms have a switch to lower/raise the "sensitivity" of the alarm too... that was another issue I had with an old car. The sensitivity was set too high... if it was a bitch of a windy day, it would go off.

I found the fuse for the alarm which I could take out and that would kill it, right? Obviously I'd like to keep the alarm going but I might just have to end it if I can't figure out another option.

So I found the fuse that says "Theft Security Horn" and I tried to pull it, but it wouldn't come out. How the hell do I get that sumbitch out? This is getting embarassing.

you have to wiggle a fuse a bit to get it to come out. it's a little tough for people with big fingers.

So it turns out there are two fuse boxes, one with the regular small fuses, and one with fuses that are like 1"x1". I couldn't get the big ones out, and I even took the car to Knects to have them try and they couldn't either. I ended up taking out the regular small fuse labled "anti horn". Hopefully this temporarily solves it.

I'm assuming we're talking about a factory alarm, yes?

The larger 1" x 1" fuses actually sound like relays. There should be like a sleeve that latches on at the bottom where it slides onto the relay housing. It could be the relay that's going all screwy on you, or it could be an issue with a door sensor, or possibly even an issue with the computer.

A relay should run you anywhere from $20-80 and isn't too hard to change yourself. a small flathead screwdriver should be helpful for removal, but be careful not to crack the tab.

You could also do a test to see if the problem is the relay by switching it with another relay that has similar terminals (metal connectors). See if the windshield wipers or headlight relay is similar, seeing as you don't need these to drive the car, except at night or in the rain. Swap the relays and see if it helps at all. If the problem persists, it means that the relay is NOT the problem.
