HockeyDude1712 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2007 One thing I was told when I first started reffing was if your hand moves because of a penalty then dont have second thoughts because it is a penalty. Make sure you keep your head on the players/puck at all times and never turn your back on them. If you have any questions just pm me

Miike 1 Report post Posted January 15, 2007 You control what will happen late in the game in terms of shit and greasy play. Call stuff early, take control, and you should be alright. Also, be confident. There's nothing worse then an inconfident official.
kosydar 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2007 First off, make sure your linesmen know its your first game with the bands. If they're at least decent they'll help you out there. You've done the two man system before I assume, so that should help you out. Just keep the mind set that both ends are your zone. Its a hell of a lot more skating than linesing a three man, but its also much easier to stay in the game. I think all the advice above has been good. Really define your role as the head ref (make the linesmen put up the nets, wait for you to go on the ice, etc.) as I've always felt that this puts you in the proper mindset for how the game should be officiated. Don't be afraid to use your linesmen. If you don't know if a goal went in or what penalties should be called, don't hesitate to skate to the ref's crease and discuss things until you think you have things right. Try to stay consistant throughout the game. However, this doesn't mean that the penalty counts for each team should be the same. Each team plays a completely different game; the shot totals will be different, the hit totals will be different, the score will be different, and 9 out of 10 times the penalty count should be different. Its a situation where you'll be really nervous at first, but as the game progresses you'll get acclimated. Don't let the players know its your first game, keep your confidence and be decisive. Hope this helps, good luck. Once you get the first one out of the way you'll start to look forward to them.
