Bad Sharpening

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this has been answered before I searched but didn't find the answer to my question. I got my skates sharpened at the sports plus in Cincinnati last night the guy at the desk didn't charge me the six bucks because he was eating and didn't feel like ringing it up. I guess it was a good thing though because it wasn't worth six cents. When I stepped onto the ice everytime I turned to tight or tried to stop my blades would immediately just stop if I would have tried to stop full speed I would have gone flying the other direction on my ass. My question is if I go get them resharpened somewhere how would I ask for them to be done. I do not know a thing about sharpening blades I have no clue what any of the numbers mean or radius or pitch and profiling and all that I have no clue what any of it means. Someone help me out when I get them redone what do I ask for?

It sounds like the hollow is too deep for you which would cause too much bite. Do you have any idea what hollow they were sharpened at?

What height and weight are you? What skates are you wearing? What level of a skater are you?

Tried this and didn't really notice a slant.

It sounds as though the hollow is off. Go back to the same place and ask them to re-do it. Tell them what happened. A sharpener will always fix what is said the be a bad job.

I thought you refreshed this old post of mine...

This looks like a badly honed(dressed) stone.....very badly.

I've had that before. It's probably 5/16 that he gave you. Make sure when you go back you repeatedly say 1/2 inch. If it happens again, either complain to the supervisor, or go somewhere else.

I normally do not go there but I was at a tournament and really needed a sharpening. I normally go to the Hockey Stop in Columbus and they always do a good job I'm not sure what hollow they usually give me I will have to ask next time I go back.

Why do you assume it's 5/16ths? The default sharpen is usually 1/2. A sharpener has to be retarded to go up to 5/16ths for someone who doesn't ask for it.
