skates- ice compared to roller...

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this has been covered but how do CCM Vector and Reebok ice hockey skates compare to their roller hockey skate counterparts? As an example you can buy Reebok 6K Pump roller hockey skates for around $250.00 but 5K Pump ice hockey skates cost around $230.00. Is a like numbered Reebok ice hockey skate boot the equal in quality to it's roller counterpart? And is a CCM Vector 10.0 ice hockey skate boot the equal to a Vector 10.0 roller hockey skate boot?

Thanks

Rick Henry

Generally if an ice skates costs the same as a roller, the ice is better quality. Remember when you buy roller, you are paying for bearings, wheels, chassis etc.

When you pay for ice, you are essentially paying for the boot. Hope this helps.

i definitely think wk is a bit off base.

roller hockey boots are made to take a bit more of a beating, so it would seem. when you fall on the floor, your boot is gonna wear down more than on ice.

i mean, i could be wrong... but thats just the way i see it.

A quick update to my original post.......

I just recently got a chance to compare some same brand ice hockey skates to roller hockey skates. For example I compared a Reebok 6K Pump(roller) skate to a Reebok 5K Pump(ice)hockey skate. To me the 5K ice boot appeared to be a better quality product than the 6K roller boot. Disclaimer, I may be wrong and I have not skated in either but that was my impression. I do however believe that in the past with CCM the boot were the same except for graphics. At one time, 10 years ago or more, I had CCM 652 Super Tacks ice hockey skates and CCM 655 Super Tacks roller hockey skates and the boots were identical other than the trim colors. The roller version had black felt in the tongue and black in the tendon guard area and the ice version had white. I always figured CCM replaced the white with black on the roller version because in the early 90's most of us played outside on blacktop and the white would get pretty nasty looking.

Well I can say we definitely don't skimp on our roller vs. our ice...I believe our roller boots are built a bit stronger, because of the excessive wear and tear the happens on Roller...

I'm skeptical in that even if Mission doesn't skimp on their inline boots, the ice boots are probably much better. Also, when's the last time you saw someone mount a Pitch holder on a pairof Wicked Lites? :P

Justin,

I wish I could have taken a look at some of the Mission line but the shop I was in didn't have any of the newer Mission Wicked skates. From what I have read and seen Mission and Tour really have some quality skate offerings. The only thing I have heard that is negative about some of the past lines of Mission skates was concerning the chassis. I'm a bigger guy and I don't like most of the chassis I have seen on past models of Mission skates with the exception of the top end models and the Wicked line but really the same could be said about most of the other companies mid range skates. To me if the skate doesn't have a good quality chassis I don't want it no matter how good the boot is but thats just me.

Rick: Our chassis return rate is less than 0.5% of skates sold....We sell more skates than anyone, so it may sound like there is a greater problem than truly is...Easton experiences this with sticks, Bauer with Ice Hockey Skates, and we experience it with Roller Hockey skates...

The Bert...I really don't have a comment, but feel free to look for yourself...Not to many people change their S-Series or Fuel skates into Roller....I built both Ice and Roller skates, I think I would know...

it seems to me that more and more people are converting their ice skates to roller. i personally would love to do that to the fuels with a Mg chassis or sprung. I also think that roller boots are made to a higher quality but dont switch it to ice because of the costs. and i think no one has switched the wiked 1's to ice because they like them in roller and dont wanna pay another 600 for another pair for ice. just my 2 cents on the matter

Justin,

What you said does make a lot of sense. One of the reasons I like this forum is because there are several people here with lots of experience and first hand knowledge.

Could you look at it from this perspective?: On $250 ice and roller skates, the cost of an ice holder with runner is considerably less than that of the chassis, bearings and wheels in an inline skates. The manufacturer can put more money into the ice boot than an inline boot?

However, that being said, companies may have similar pricing on ice vs boot to have more profit margins on ice skates (they'll sell cuz obviously ice is more popular and more demand than rollerblades) - that may or may not necessarily be true.

To counter my arguement, for rollerblades, really, the only thing the company needs to manufacture or design (ontop of the boot) is the chassis (with the exception of Tours where Labeda designs their chassis, or at least makes them)...the wheels and bearings, im sure they get something worked out between companies...ie/ bearings & wheels...
