The "Trade of the Century" and likely the most significant trade in any sport in recent times: Gretzky to LA. A star traded in his prime that proved that hockey could thrive in a non-hockey area. So much has changed since then but this is where it all began.

i would say 1988 is more significant because thats when selanne was drafted, and he was clearly a huge part in the ducks success.

He's saying if not for Gretz to LA in '88 you wouldn't have San Jose/Anaheim or Tampa/Florida or Phoenix or all the other non hockey markets that are in the NHL now.

LA may not have survived in LA without the buzz that Gretz brought in '88 and in '93 with the Cup run.
