Arthroscopic Surgery

Recommended Posts

Well caught a rut in the ice ankle bent over and then had someone fall on top of me and hurt my knee. After consultation with orthopedist he suspects torn medial meniscus. Ligaments he feels are in good shape. I am awaiting further information from a MRI.

Anyone have this surgery for partial removal of meniscus? Was it done under a local or general anesthesia? Doctor is saying 6 weeks and I will be skating again. What should I expect? Any thoughts very much appreciated.

You and your doctor won't really know what's wrong until you get that MRI, but I had a torn meniscus and other misc. cartilage repaired several years ago. Mine started out with local anesthesia, but quickly turned to general when I could feel the doc going into the knee. Six weeks to skating again sounds realistic depending on how extensive the work is and what your rehab/therapy is afterwards. Good luck.

Also, if they tell you not to drink water or other fluids in the hours leading up to the operation - best to heed that advice.

Menisci tears are generally done under a general anestetic. Partial removal of the meniscus has a quicker recovery time, yet can lead to a greater degree of arthritis and stiffness in the joints in the long run. Repair of the torn meniscus will have a longer healing time, but typically have no adverse effects after the recovery time.

Since it is medial side-inner side-they usually do not repair there because there isn't a lot of blood flow. That is what a couple of orthopedists have told me. I have a small tear on my right side medial meniscus that I had a MRI on 5 years ago and opted out of surgery and focused on strengthening the areas surrounding it. This left side I can't do that. Much more damage and knee sometimes locks. Talk about pain!!! Anyone that had this surgery regret it? Do you feel 100% after awhile?

Tore my ACL and lateral meniscus earlier this year. Had surgery to correct the torn meniscus in July and left the ACL to be supported by a Don Joy brace. Started the season in September and the knee felt good. Now after about 10-12 skates, it takes about 4-5 days to get the swelling/fluid down. This is something that I have accepted will be the norm from now on and will probably end my playing days in the next year or two.

This is the aftermath after 2-1/2 hours of surgery to re-attatch my IT band which I had evulged (broken) from the bone root. It had snapped and coiled (like a 1985 slap bracelet) up to the middle of my thigh and looked like I had a golf ball under my skin. Nasty. A couple of months in a wheel chair, crutches for a number of months....but about 14 months later....back on the ice. :)
