New Skates Purchase

Recommended Posts

Hey I am new to the site and I have heard a lot of good things about it. I was looking for some new skates because once I broke in my Nike Bauer Supreme 50s they got a little too much room in them for my liking. I was going to stick to Nike Bauer, as I have always worn Bauer but then I remembered hearing many good things about Grafs. In the end after trying on other top end skates such as the One90 and Supreme 70, I decided to pick up the Graf Supra 705's, the new Texalite model. I needed them a half size smaller than the store model so I gotta wait for them to come in, but what are your opinions on my purchase? Just curious. BTW I bought them from the LHS, no online BS. It turns out when I got home I checked hockeymonkey.com and I got them 30 dollars cheaper than hockeymonkey, and I get a sharpening and profiling and a heat mold. Not bad IMO.

Congrats on the purchase.

Graf skates are great because they come in so many different cuts. If you have a high instep or what-have-you then they have a model that will fit you better. Nike Bauer skates are amazing, but they only offer three cuts: Vapor, Supreme, and Flexlite (and custom).

I always recommend using a LHS rather than on-line unless it's absolutely necessary. Pro-shops are staple of the sport. And, where are you going to turn to when you shop up at the rink and realize you've forgotten your shin-pads?

Yeah they weren't the lightest skates, but they just felt perfect from the get go, unlike the One90 which felt like it was made of cement and probably require many hours for break in.

Most of the people I know who had the One90s said it took them A LONG time to break in. Also, if you did not have a very "text-book foot" the fit could be off and further complicate things. I had to stretch and punch out the skate for a few people.

Having said that, most people were very happy with the skates once they broke them in. Since the oldest One90s are only a year and a half old we have to wait to see if the ratio of break-in time to break-down time is favorable.

Meh it doesn't really matter because I opted for the Supra 705s anyhow. They only had one pair left, and it was a 10. I put my foot in it and it was love at first ...I dunno, it just felt like it fit the way a skate should fit. I had a finger width at the heel and I know my feet are done growing, so I had him order me up a 9.5. I'm not too big on the weight issue because I have never skated on an ultra light skate such as the One 90, so I will stay in the ignorant is bliss category. The Supreme 50 is probably around the same weight as Graf. If I don't like the stance of the runner, I might swap it out for a LS2 which would probably lighten the weight a bit anyways.

Has anyone made the Cobra swap to a LS2 on any Graf models or specifically the 705? How heavy are they in comparison? I have always used LS and then LS2 up until this skate (and my brief ownership of the 50's which have the Customs) and I'm thinking about buying the holders/steel for my new 705s. Also any opinions on the Cobra holders would be appreciated.

Before I got into some one90's I had two pairs of the old 705's, each lasting about 4-5 years. They both had cobra holders and I did not have any problems with the holders themselves. I broke steels a couple of times, but since the holders are "user friendly" the changing of the steel took no time at all. All in all a very good skate. Very durable and the holders are not bad, maybe a little heavy and rigid, but nothing you cant get used to.
