Trimming a Standard Blade to fit a Tapered shaft?

Recommended Posts

Okay Gents, the question I pose to the more knowledgeable folks here is this:

Can a standard blade be shaved/cut/filed down to fit a tapered shaft? If so, what would be effected performance wise?

I've done it with several wooden blades and haven't had any issues with them. I've even shortened the hosel and tapered the blade. The blades didn't seem to have any issues with performance after the operation.

I used a wood chisel to mark where I wanted the hosel to stop and removed the excess wood with it. Then I sanded the whole thing down to fit the tapered shaft with a belt sander. Turned out really well. The only way you can tell it was originally a standard blade is that the graphics got cut off a bit.

I would suggest taking your time and practicing on an old blade first.
